Hi, my name is Cheryl Kehner. I am a Marriage and Family Therapist in the San Francisco Bay area working with clients in the state of California via telehealth. I work with adults and specialize in helping manage stress, anxiety, depression , and thoughts getting in the way of living your authentic life. My style is eclectic, incorporating mindfulness, Somatic therapy, and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Many people often disconnect from their bodily experiences missing clues your body provides about your wants and needs. Somatic therapies and mindfulness can help bring us back to the body and living in a more authentic way.

I believe anyone can benefit from therapy. Seeing a therapist means you were willing to ask for help in dealing with the overwhelming circumstances that sometimes come your way. We all face times of anxiety and depression , and a little professional guidance can help us not just survive these times, but can result in happier, healthier people for facing the trials. I particularly believe that giving this healing space to children is beneficial; allowing their experiences and emotions to be treated respectfully and resolved empathically can let them move forward and make better choices throughout the rest of their lives.

I frequently work with adult and child/adolescent clients with trauma, depression , anxiety, attachment, adjustment, and communication issues.
I frequently work with individuals and families with a wide variety of challenges. Some clients are simply looking to find a place that they can take a deep breath and be in a place to address things that they want to work on. While others have severe symptoms or complex issues that are frightening and overwhelming where they need help sorting out thoughts and feelings while learning how to manage and navigate the challenges. Each client is unique and so are their experiences so my goal is to tailor treatment to best benefit my clients.

With over 20 years of experience practicing therapy, We specialize in treating anxiety, depression , trauma, codependency, and relationship issues.
You're authentic self! Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Feeling exhausted being overwhelmed and sad? Those who are closest to you can't see your pain because you have hidden how you truly feel by wearing a mask. Wearing a mask allows you to get through the day, but fall apart when alone. In therapy you take off the mask, breathe and reveal your true feelings, gain insight into how to decrease your pain and live a more balanced healthier life. Getting help is not a sign of weakness, but strength. It takes a great deal of strength and courage to take this step towards feeling better.

I have experience working with children, individuals, couples and families in a wide range of concerns including depression , anxiety, mood disorders, parenting challenges, work stress, family and relationship issues and various life changes since 1997.
My approach tends to be cognitive behavioral in nature and I use distress tolerance techniques (DBT). I like to tailor my approach to an individual’s goals & particular needs. What that means is that I like to collaborate with a client to find active steps to take to better one’s quality of life. It is solution-focused, and brief in nature. I believe that self-care and mindfulness are essential tools for quality of life, yet we aren’t always taught how to do that for ourselves. My clients say that I am direct, yet compassionate, and that they feel validated & empowered to make changes in their lives.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
