I have had experience working with individuals with trauma, substance use, and homelessness.
You have taken a brave step by deciding to seek therapy. Remembering unpleasant events and becoming aware of feelings attached to those events can bring on strong feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, and hopelessness. We will work collaboratively to support you on this new journey to find your true self. Utilizing a strengths based approach that can incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other modalities, we can create positive changes.

Contemporary society places an enormous burden upon the individual to succeed - and look good while doing it - at the same time as the fabric of our families are disintegrating and social supports are fragmented. Many of us have survived a childhood of chaos and, if we have been able to form a lasting intimate relationship, find that our partner is ill-equipped as well, to surmount the many personal, financial, social, political challenges of today's world. My approach is informed by therapeutic practices which emphasize compassion, gaining insight, and developing acceptance of one's true self.

It feels like you're falling apart. Each day brings overwhelming emotions or a sense of disconnection and numbness. Trusting others, expressing yourself, or prioritizing your needs without fearing judgment is an immense challenge. Inside, an exhausting internal battle rages, pulling you in conflicting directions. Everywhere you look, reminders of past harms infiltrate your mind, stifling your voice and fracturing your sense of security. Unrelenting pain makes the memory of vibrancy feel distant and unreachable. You long for a sense of peace and joy, yet they seem perpetually out of reach.

I have been in private practice for the last 15 years. I work with individuals. Most of my clients are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or all three. Typically they are making their way through a major upheaval in their lives, such as divorce, tragic loss, job stress, severe communication problems, and strained family relationships. They're often depressed, angry, confused, or anxious. My work with couples and families is for the most part communication therapy. I never stop being amazed when clients explain to me that for the first time they're feeling heard, really heard, by their partners, children, or parents.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
