I am an experienced psychologist with expertise in the areas of infertility, pregnancy
loss
,
bereavement
and family building. I offer a compassionate, safe setting to talk through the pain and
loss
that infertility and
grief
bring. It is easy to begin to feel as if there is nothing left in your life but your infertility and
grief
. Feelings of depression, isolation and anxiety begin to take over. During these times, it is important to remember that you can begin to feel better and more in control of your life. You don't have to go through the experience of
grief
and infertility alone.

I have years of experience and training using this approach to treat anxiety, panic, PTSD and depression and the underlying issues that contribute to these such as trauma,
grief
and anger.
Perhaps you are dealing with painful events outside of your control, your emotions are becoming unmanageable, or you are experiencing a new symptom that is sudden and overwhelming. It is very human to want to "feel normal" when dealing with these, but sometimes how we attempt to do this hurts us more. This could include the different ways we avoid our emotions, attempt to “be perfect" or negatively judge ourselves. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) I will help you identify and change ways of thinking and behaving that are impacting your mental health.

This is me at the beach with Shannon, our 25 year-old daughter. My wife Vicki and I had the good fortune to raise her here in beautiful San Diego North County, where she has had the opportunity to become an accomplished surfer, sailor, diver, and nature photographer. Vicki and I are a Marriage and Family Therapist team in private practice here for 20+ years in Encinitas, California. As well as seeing couples and families, I have specialized in treating anxiety disorders and phobias, depression, alcohol and substance abuse, and adolescents.
I completed my B.A.degree at the University of Connecticut and graduate training at Purdue University. Using an eclectic approach, I combine elements of cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, client-centered and mindfulness therapies in my practice. I am also certified in Clinical Hypnosis for use in weight
loss
, smoking cessation, habit control and anxiety reduction.
I began focusing on treating adolescents very early in my career, and I have always enjoyed working with their youthful energy. Helping parents to work more closely together and develope simple and effective parenting skills can transform a stressful, contentious family life i

Why do we feel persistent guilt, shame, sadness, anxiousness, anger or hopelessness? Why do we find ourselves in situations and relationships that are hurtful and unsatisfying? Why do we repeat unhealthy behaviors? Why can't we find the motivation to become who we know we are capable to be? Why are we addicted? Often it is because we are relying on maladaptive coping skills and defense mechanisms to navigate challenging or even traumatic experiences. I whole-heartedly believe in the ability and resiliency of the human spirit and I offer a safe and therapeutic environment in which to process, learn, grow and develop healthier skills.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
