I believe all human beings move naturally towards self mastery and belonging. Early trauma, developmental hurts,
grief
and bad luck disturb our wholeness and full potential. We are caught in protective layering of negativity, pain and self defeating behaviors. This state of disconnection with happiness and full embodiment is what brings people into my office. Who am I? I am a deeply empathetic and authentic person. I have a sense of humor. I am inquisitive about my client's journeys. In the rich ground of the therapeutic relationship historical wounding can be reworked and a new sense of self can flourish.

Do you feel over sensitive or misunderstood, or that patterns keep repeating in your life? Therapy is a unique experience that gets under the patterns to see why and how they got you into a negative space-and then to help get unstuck. Working through your experience of
loss
can help make sense of the depression or anxiety that are taking too much or your time and energy. That unlocks the natural development of healthy self esteem. Therapy helps you reclaim yourself from the 'unfinished business' of life stresses. Please inquire through email LauraShlien@gmail.com, as calls from this site may get lost and I want to respond to you

As you start on the path to motherhood are you feeling anxious, sad, perhaps ashamed or just not yourself? It can be frustrating, draining, overwhelming, and at times heartbreaking. This is likely not how you thought it would be. It feels like it should be a natural, seamless process filled with joyous moments. Unfortunately, it's often not the reality. I recognize and acknowledge that this can be a difficult time, and I am here to support you regardless of where you are in this journey. Imagine how it would be to feel more like yourself again. To feel confident, happy, calm, and entering motherhood as your best self.

You are committed to feeling better, you've tried everything, but still you feel lost in the pain. You've always been able to "fix" things in your life, why not this? This time, you feel stuck. Maybe you feel gripped by anxiety or panic. Maybe you feel consumed by
grief
from trauma or
loss
of a person, pet, or life dream. Maybe you're finding yourself in new life circumstances (a significant health challenge, life milestone, career or relationship change) and wonder "who am I now"? Life has a way of challenging us. There is a way through.

Frustrated? Unhappy? Want some insight and change? I offer an encouraging approach to help you explore your world in a therapeutic environment. I believe that everyone is the expert of their own experience; you have lived your life longer than I have known you. I often use the metaphor of being a flashlight in a dark cave, shedding light on different things, however, you, as the client are in the driver's seat; I am in the passenger seat, as a co-driver. Together, we will explore your personal meanings and experiences while making larger connections to your goals. I invite you to our journey together in creating new meaning.

Instead of looking at therapy as uncomfortable & difficult, consider this… we are our strongest when we have the courage to reveal & repair the most vulnerable aspects of ourselves. This is referred to as reframing, looking at a challenging situation in a new light. Let’s build some positive thinking patterns together. Laughing is also very therapeutic for the brain as it releases endorphins which increases focus, helps us integrate thoughts, & stimulates flexible thinking which are all important components of change & healing.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
