Your child or teen might struggle to navigate a significant life change, such as separation, divorce, a move, or a change in schools or friend groups. You might worry they are doing too much or not enough. You might notice they are becoming distant or showing signs of anxiety and stress. You want them to feel supported but struggle to connect with them like you used to. Perhaps you fear that your unresolved childhood or relationship experiences negatively affect your parenting.

It is hard to be overwhelmed and feel emotional pain. It is hard to be human. Our work can help turn your wounds into wisdom, your unnecessary suffering into more internal freedom and your stuck patterns into a new vitality in life. I tend to be a good fit for people who are not only looking for immediate relief from emotional pain, overwhelm or emptiness, but are also drawn to exploring the deeper patterns contributing to unnecessary suffering in their lives.

Psychotherapy is one of the best ways to live an examined life, opening doors to a deeper understanding of yourself and to a new way of being in the world. Mindfully tending to your psychological space, each of our sessions will focus on exploring practical answers to everyday problems, resolving fears and uncertainties, improving your life, and discovering how the psyche responds inwardly to overwhelming life events or when life-shattering events destroy outer meaning altogether. Even unavoidable and unpleasant experiences can be a source of psychological freedom.

At this moment you feel lost, disconnected from your path/career, and unsure how to find self-fulfillment while experiencing intense expectations of others. You know you need help and don't know where to turn. Explaining how lost you feel to others will make you more vulnerable than you wish to feel. You feel alone and know that something has to change. The stress of school and/or work is insurmountable, and sharing these feelings with friends and family is impossible. Your stress causes intense pressure and anxiety which is affecting every aspect of your life.

I’m Kari, an AMFT committed to creating a space where healing, growth, and authenticity are possible. My work is grounded in the belief that therapy is not about “fixing” you, but about uncovering the strengths and resilience you already possess. I see therapy as a collaborative process where we slow down, make sense of your experiences, and develop tools that help you move toward the life you want to live. My style is warm, compassionate, and direct. I draw from evidence-based approaches like CBT, Mindfulness, and IFS, while also recognizing the ways our identities and lived experiences shape how we move through the world.

For most of my clients, depression or anxiety is impacting life in a negative way. Sometimes grief, a traumatic experience, or a relationship conflict causes a disruption, and compels one to seek support and healing. Often one is struggling and has not yet been able to understand why—something just feels wrong inside and others do not see or understand it.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
