Do you feel over sensitive or misunderstood, or that patterns keep repeating in your life? Therapy is a unique experience that gets under the patterns to see why and how they got you into a negative space-and then to help get unstuck. Working through your experience of loss can help make sense of the depression or anxiety that are taking too much or your time and energy. That unlocks the natural development of healthy self esteem. Therapy helps you reclaim yourself from the 'unfinished business' of life stresses. Please inquire through email LauraShlien@gmail.com, as calls from this site may get lost and I want to respond to you

Neuroscience research has demonstrated that conditions such as depression , anxiety, PTSD, ADD, and more have brain signatures that can be seen with brain mapping procedures.
I believe that therapy can be a rewarding and life-changing experience. I became a therapist to help people lead happier, more productive lives. Clients need a sense of connection and trust, but also need someone who will gently challenge long-standing beliefs and patterns in a way that leads to positive change. I have been a therapist in the Davis community for 20 years, and have extensive training in Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, Coherence therapy, and Long term psychodynamic psychotherapy.

For most of my clients depression or anxiety is impacting life in a negative way. Sometimes grief causes this disruption; sometimes a history of early life trauma continues to undermine a sense of well-being; sometimes low self-esteem or feelings of being alone are intensifying. One may be struggling and hasn't yet found a way to make sense of why--"something just feels wrong inside of me but others cannot see or understand it."

Many of my clients struggle with relationships, life transitions, feelings of isolation, school demands, perfectionism, career decisions, parenting, body image, depression , anxiety, family issues, trauma, sexual orientation, and suicidal ideation.
I believe that each one of us has a genuine need to feel valued and connected. I also believe that connection is the foundation in our lives. We all need to find our purpose and find a place where we can belong to something bigger than ourselves. Sometimes our inability to connect with others can leave us feeling empty, hopeless or insecure. It can cause us to isolate, tolerate unhealthy relationships, abuse substances or lose our direction. When we learn to build healthy connections and find our purpose, we are more likely to experience hope and fulfillment. I am a licensed clinical social worker with 30+ years of experience.

Most people think you're doing well in life. They can't see how your past has left you feeling not good enough, full of self-doubt. You take responsibility for everything. You do a lot (and are great at some things), but your self-confidence can crumble instantaneously. You are stressed and anxious one minute, ashamed and depressed the next. You're no stranger to panic attacks, irritability, feeling blah, concentration troubles, or feeling numb. Your body is paying the price as well, with chronic tension, insomnia, high blood pressure, or unexplained physical symptoms. Living this way is exhausting!

I help people turn toward more emotionally satisfying lives by providing a safe, non-judgmental, and compassionate atmosphere that facilitates growth. Do you feel as though you are merely surviving rather than fully living? We often live and act out scripts that are no longer satisfying or, even worse, inhibiting and destructive. I can guide you through a process of self discovery that deepens your capacity to face current challenges and enrich relationships. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression , life transitions, identity shifts, addiction, or family crisis, I believe the therapeutic process provides a rich landscape in which to heal.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
