Hello, my name is Bethany and I believe psychotherapy requires finding the right match. I work with adults, couples, and families with adult children. I utilize treatment modalities that assist with mood, relationship difficulties, loss and grief, parenting challenges, life transitions,
codependency
, guilt and shame, trauma, addiction, divorce, chronic illness and/or pain, and career stagnation. I've had success with clients who are ready to do the work of self improvement and eager to understand why they may feel stuck. Congratulations on taking the first step toward healing and growth. What are your goals?

Having worked in university counseling for seven+ years, I also have extensive experience working with: life transitions, career, procrastination, emotion regulation,
codependency
, perfectionism, identity development, privilege and power, and relationships (friends, partner(s), family, coworkers, etc.
I focus on the development of the therapeutic relationship, first and foremost. This can look like: learning about you, prioritizing what you bring to session, and gently encouraging you to work toward your identified goals. I use what comes up in the therapy space as opportunities for relational skill-building, such as focusing on strengths, building self-compassion, learning to identify wants/needs, regulating emotions, and working through conflict. I interweave understandings of sociocultural context to contextualize your experience, and to move the foci of change from what isn't in your control to what is.

In my thirty years of practicing psychotherapy, I have found that it is the therapeutic relationship itself which helps effect the greatest changes. I offer a safe, supportive place to explore the impact of trauma and loss and be able to move on.

I work with adults of all genders and sexualities in individual, couple, and group settings. I believe that any symptoms or behaviors currently bothering you served a purpose at one time; if they have ceased to be useful, together we can find ways to reduce or eliminate them. I draw most heavily from somatic, cognitive-behavioral, narrative and solution-focused therapies. I specialize in brief, focused work but can engage in longer term work, if this is more appropriate for your concerns.

I view each person as an expert of their own experience, with therapy as a collaborative process focusing on an enduring connectedness with others and the world. I use an empathic, compassionate, and direct approach, which may allow for safety and trust to develop. Supported by my undergraduate training at San Francisco State University, and graduate training at the California Institute of Integral Studies, I believe in the importance of socio-cultural, environmental experiences as they contribute to the innate resilience and compassion within each person.

Do you sometimes feel alone in your pain, or worry that no one really understands you? It's not easy navigating the demands of life including family, relationships and work. Expressing yourself is difficult when you can't find the right words to say. Having to feel like you have to be the strong one every moment of the day is exhausting, or the one that holds it together for everybody. It can take a toll on your mind and body. You can be your own worst critic although you try your best to do everything right.

I enjoy working with motivated and ambitious couples and individuals who are willing to put in the time and effort that it takes to work on themselves. I believe that starting therapy takes courage; it shows that a person wants more for themselves, their relationship, and their partner. You may have struggled with expressing your needs or advocating for yourself in the past – I can help you understand your needs more and learn to set boundaries when stress feels unbearable.

Psychotherapy is one of the best ways to live an examined life, opening doors to a deeper understanding of yourself and to a new way of being in the world. Mindfully tending to your psychological space, each of our sessions will focus on exploring practical answers to everyday problems, resolving fears and uncertainties, improving your life, and discovering how the psyche responds inwardly to overwhelming life events or when life-shattering events destroy outer meaning altogether. Even unavoidable and unpleasant experiences can be a source of psychological freedom.

I work with trauma, depression, attachment wounding, and low self-esteem and use EMDR to help adults move beyond areas where they have become stuck. My work focuses on finding effective strategies to operate in the present then tackling emotional flashbacks and quagmires that keep us tied to past. Finding a therapist who fits can make all the difference. My clients tell me that they feel safe, seen, and heard with me. Please call me for a phone consultation to find out if my practice would fit for you.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
