Shame, anxiety, overwhelming stress and relationship difficulties can disrupt our ability to live a mindful and conscious life. Working with adults and adolescents to promote acceptance, empathy and compassion is my primary interest and the approach I take in therapy. I also have experience and a passion for working with clients who are struggling with Eating Disorders and body image issues. I feel that the energy between therapist and client is the first step in healing emotional wounds and promoting positive changes.

Hello, my name is Bethany and I believe psychotherapy requires finding the right match. I work with adults, couples, and families with adult children. I utilize treatment modalities that assist with mood, relationship difficulties, loss and grief, parenting challenges, life transitions, codependency, guilt and shame, trauma, addiction, divorce, chronic illness and/or pain, and career stagnation. I've had success with clients who are ready to do the work of self improvement and eager to understand why they may feel stuck. Congratulations on taking the first step toward healing and growth. What are your goals?

I draw from various modalities depending on client needs. I find experiential techniques especially useful to identify and locate emotions that are at work in your mind and body in the here and now. We can work across the developmental and mind-body spectrum of experience, from understanding our own nervous system and stress response to what we do with our emotions. What are the feedback loops that put more pressure on us and create more stress? When we find that patterns that were adaptive at one time are not as useful any more, we can move toward change for healthier ways of being and relating.

I specialize in helping people improve their relationship to one's self as well as one's loved ones. Symptoms such as depression or anxiety, or feelings of shame, can interfere with these connections. Our psyches naturally want to move towards health and growth yet we can get stuck or hopeless that relief is possible. I believe in the values of self-growth, self-acceptance and self-reliance. Given that many trauma feelings were created in relationship, I believe we all need a trusting relationship to heal. If I'm that person for you, I will take that role very seriously and work hard for your hopes, needs, healing, and growth.

At this moment you feel lost, disconnected from your path/career, and unsure how to find self-fulfillment while experiencing intense expectations of others. You know you need help and don't know where to turn. Explaining how lost you feel to others will make you more vulnerable than you wish to feel. You feel alone and know that something has to change. The stress of school and/or work is insurmountable, and sharing these feelings with friends and family is impossible. Your stress causes intense pressure and anxiety which is affecting every aspect of your life.

For most of my clients, depression or anxiety is impacting life in a negative way. Sometimes grief, a traumatic experience, or a relationship conflict causes a disruption, and compels one to seek support and healing. Often one is struggling and has not yet been able to understand why—something just feels wrong inside and others do not see or understand it.

I believe that we all have the ability to grow and change and sometimes we need help in order to do so. The therapeutic relationship can be a place for connection, healing, insight and acceptance.

As a former medical oncology social worker, I understand the impact a new diagnosis (from cancer to dementia) can have on someone’s mental health and that of their loved ones.
I believe in the therapeutic match. First and foremost. I also think humor is tremendously important and helpful in this work and during these unprecedented times. I am influenced by attachment theory, problem and solution focused work, psychodynamic therapy and current neurobiological research.

It seems that life does not always take us where we want or had expected to go. I look forward to the opportunity to help you to find your way back to the path that feels most comfortable to you. I am especially interested in helping individuals and couples experiencing obstacles and conflict in their lives. The power to heal is within all of us and by partnering with a therapist we can achieve the changes that we know are within us, as individuals and as partnerships.

Cancer Therapists
How does cancer affect mental health?
A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.

What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?
The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?
Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counseling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.

How long does cancer therapy typically last?
The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
