Are you suffering from anxiety, depression or the aftermath of trauma? Do you struggle with painful patterns in your life that persist despite your best efforts toward change? Are you nervous to try therapy because of the expense and exposure? Have strong effort and promising insights in previous therapy failed to bring you relief? Are you struggling with a difficult child or teenager and feeling like your good intentions and best efforts are not reaching them? Traditional, insight-oriented therapy may help with such challenges--but if not, behavioral therapy may help, regardless of success with mental insight and understanding.

In addition to my work with substance abuse, I also enjoy working with couples and families with adolescent and adult children.
Are you unable to reach your goals? Do you feel there are some obstacles in the way of your success? I have been in private practice for 20 years helping people to understand and overcome issues resulting from family of origin issues, life's traumas and repetitive thinking patterns that interfere with their goals. I have experience working with individuals, couples and families from many cultures, religions and alternative lifestyles. Not all therapists can work with all people, call or e-mail me today to evaluate if we are a good fit.

Do you struggle on the inside, even if others see you as capable? Maybe you criticize yourself or think you should be achieving more. I work with people who are successful in some areas and not in others. They may be frequently frustrated, disappointed, ashamed, or even angry, but they don’t know why. So they beat themselves up, hide their pain, and often give up on their dreams. As a therapist, I help my adult and adolescent clients discover how to respect, trust, and care for themselves, so they can live life fully again.

I help people turn toward more emotionally satisfying lives by providing a safe, non-judgmental, and compassionate atmosphere that facilitates growth. Do you feel as though you are merely surviving rather than fully living? We often live and act out scripts that are no longer satisfying or, even worse, inhibiting and destructive. I can guide you through a process of self discovery that deepens your capacity to face current challenges and enrich relationships. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, identity shifts, addiction, or family crisis, I believe the therapeutic process provides a rich landscape in which to heal.

I believe that you are intrinsically worthy of love and belonging but I know that often we are made to believe that being ourselves is not good enough. Self-love and acceptance can begin within this space; a place where all feel welcomed and relaxed, free from cultural and societal expectations. I'm glad you're here.

It may seem that the experiences you have been through, or maybe the ways you’ve been dealing with your emotional pain, are too embarrassing, too shameful, too big. You may be asking yourself: “Will anyone understand?” Or even: “Could anyone accept me if they really knew?” It's so important that you know that you are not alone. Though the particularities of your experiences are uniquely yours, this human life is full of complex pain and sorrows just like what you are struggling with now. It is possible to find a way. Through curious exploration, you may develop a deeper understanding of your internal processes and how you got here.

Is something in your life not quite working the way you would like? Are you feeling stuck? It can often be helpful to talk though some of the issues we are struggling with in a therapeutic relationship that feels understanding, safe, and compassionate. Human beings aren't meant to "go it alone". In fact, feeling alone is inherently traumatizing itself. I have been licensed for over 20 years, working with individuals, couples, and families to heal their relationships, and to overcome trauma, depression, and addictions.

As a fat, queer, neurodivergent disruptor of societal norms and systems, I hold a strength-based attachment focused framework that values and celebrates all genders, sexualities, bodies, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, family structures, religions, and socio-economic locations. I see these intersectionalities as a beautiful tapestry of personal empowerments which can become the foundation from which we work collectively to identify, address and dismantle systems of oppression. I believe humans shouldn’t be pathologized in a society designed to keep people sick and stuck.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
