As humans we possess the incredible capacity to collaborate with, depend upon, and connect with others. These innate skills enhance our ability to cope under harsh life circumstances. Asking for help is the first step to enhancing your own abilities and skills of connection, healing, growth, self-awareness and so much more. If you are ready to take this step and team up with another to improve your life, send me an email or give me a call!
Do you feel over sensitive or misunderstood, or that patterns keep repeating in your life? Therapy is a unique experience that gets under the patterns to see why and how they got you into a negative space-and then to help get unstuck. Working through your experience of loss can help make sense of the depression or anxiety that are taking too much or your time and energy. That unlocks the natural development of healthy self esteem. Therapy helps you reclaim yourself from the 'unfinished business' of life stresses. Please inquire through email LauraShlien@gmail.com, as calls from this site may get lost and I want to respond to you
Our lives here on earth are a creative experience! At times, we need a place to rest and tend to our inner world. I view the therapeutic process as a brave space to access parts of ourselves that we want to grow and transform. My goal in working with you is to provide a supportive environment that will cultivate an increased awareness of your needs, self-compassion and understanding of who you are becoming.
I offer a warm, compassionate, down-to-earth, non-judgmental style that lends itself to creating a safe and trusting therapeutic environment for healing, growth and change. I work actively and collaboratively with you to develop an integrated approach to treatment that is tailored to suit your unique concerns and goals. We may explore historical and current emotions, thoughts and behavior patterns that are keeping you from more meaningful relationships, esteem and the quality of life you want. I encourage your feedback and am flexible to work with your changing needs.
Does your son or daughter seem unhappy, worried or frightened? Do they frequently get into trouble at school? Has there been a shift in their behavior that concerns you? Do they have difficulty making or maintaining friendships? Do they act mean, have angry outbursts or act aggressively because they cannot control their actions? Are they restless or have difficulty concentrating? These are just some of the problems I assist children, adolescents and their families in overcoming. Call me and we can talk further. I also work with adults with anxiety, parenting challenges, or who have struggled with trauma.
Sometimes it feels like we are going through life wearing a mask - pretending to be someone you are not and acting like everything is okay. Yet in reality, we feel like everything is falling apart or that we are tired and burnt out from trying to impress those around us.
I create a healing space for those who are struggling with anxiety, depression and managing their emotions. These issues can cause stress in your daily life and in relationship with others. I do believe that there is a way to honor our lived experiences while learning new skills to help manage your emotional life.
I am offering in-person therapy only. Self doubt, lack of confidence, stuck-ness, and living through challenging daily symptoms and stressors can make it hard to access authenticity, zestfulness and your life's full potential. You are capable of healing, shifting and integrating negative experiences into something that can launch you forward and bring wisdom. I offer warm presence, encouraging easeful participation and inviting your creative spirit. You can unlock, embrace and expand your personal capacity for growth, authenticity, innovation, self-expression and positive impact.
I work with adolescents and young adults. I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults who are having a particularly difficult time with major life transitions. I also work with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, difficulties with relationships and individuals who are struggling with a particularly difficult period or event in their lives. Regardless of what i am helping with, my treatment begins and ends with the therapeutic relationship. My first priority in treatment is creating a safe, warm and caring environment for my client from which all other work is built on.
As a therapist, the connection between my client and me is central to the process. By fostering a safe and deep relationship, we can explore both immediate and historical issues that are causing suffering and pain. We will use a combination of mind, body and emotional understanding to explore the layers of the self. With increased insight and awareness, you will feel a greater sense of well being and satisfaction in all areas of your life.
Instead of looking at therapy as uncomfortable & difficult, consider this… we are our strongest when we have the courage to reveal & repair the most vulnerable aspects of ourselves. This is referred to as reframing, looking at a challenging situation in a new light. Let’s build some positive thinking patterns together. Laughing is also very therapeutic for the brain as it releases endorphins which increases focus, helps us integrate thoughts, & stimulates flexible thinking which are all important components of change & healing.
YOU DON'T NEED MORE TALK - YOU NEED RELIEF. We don't do journaling out loud. Some forms of therapy can be the equivalent to what we call "journaling out loud" where each session is comprised of whatever you feel like sharing about from your week or your past. While this type of process is important to the counseling process and does occur in some amount each week, this isn't the work of therapy that facilitates healing. In our view, you will feel temporary relief from doing this in the same way that you do when journaling or talking to a friend. In counseling jargon we call this "catharsis."
My practice focuses on helping people develop healthier relationships with themselves and others. I believe in building a safe, respectful and compassionate relationship with my clients where we can exchange direct, honest, and meaningful feedback. Within this trusting relationship, we can explore your challenges and strengths so that you have more healthy choices regarding your life goals. Whether you struggle with anxiety, depression, stress, anger, isolation, grief or relationship issues, or if you simply want to live more authentically and fully, there is hope. Key elements in the change process include curiosity and a desire to learn about yourself.
Somewhere inside, we have a deep sense of knowing. Some of us stand calmly in it. Others catch glimpses. You belong here: in this place, at this time. You deserve to love and be loved fully. You have unique gifts: yours to delight in and share with the world as you will. If you have forgotten, I want to help you remember.
What goes on in your mind, plays out in your body, and becomes your reality in your world. Whether you are entering therapy for the first time or you are looking to refine changes in your life, you are starting on a journey of self discovery which is deeply personal and courageous. Each person arrives with their own unique life story, strengths, barriers and goals. Therapy is a collaborative process. I believe my role is to create a non-judgmental, warm, respectful, and safe environment.
Life can be challenging at times. However, I believe that people have an amazing ability to heal and transform negative patterns that are no longer serving them, as well as develop more meaningful ways to approach life's hurdles. We can often get stuck during difficult moments, and outside support can be helpful during these times. As my client, I will support and encourage you to identify the solutions that are best for your life. I understand that deciding to reach out for help can be intimidating. My treatment approach will respect and honor your individual process.
I believe strongly in meeting clients where they are at and taking a collaborative approach to meeting the treatment goals of therapy. I know for some, it can be anxiety provoking to seek therapy, and I strive to create an environment that is warm and focused on the issues that matter to the client.
I provide an accepting, nonjudgmental place for you to explore who you are, how you got to where you are, and to help you move forward in your life. If you or your are finding the stress of the Covid-19 epidemic overwhelming or notice that you are having difficulty coping with events that previously would not have caused you difficulty, I can give you support and tools to weather the crisis. If you have been considering getting therapy for a while, we can begin our work together online and transfer to working in person when it is safe to do so. .
Hello and welcome! Thank you very much for your interest in learning more about my practice. I approach therapy from a strengths-based perspective, and together, our focus would be on helping you access your innate strengths so that you could reach your true potential and live an enriching life full of meaning and happiness. My approach is interactive, client-centered, and compassionate. I incorporate a solution-focused approach using cognitive-behavioral techniques. If you are interested in finding support for your son or daughter, I view you as a invaluable partner in this process and would welcome your participation and feedback.
Most people think you're doing well in life. They can't see how your past has left you feeling not good enough, full of self-doubt. You take responsibility for everything. You do a lot (and are great at some things), but your self-confidence can crumble instantaneously. You are stressed and anxious one minute, ashamed and depressed the next. You're no stranger to panic attacks, irritability, feeling blah, concentration troubles, or feeling numb. Your body is paying the price as well, with chronic tension, insomnia, high blood pressure, or unexplained physical symptoms. Living this way is exhausting!
