As a biracial, queer woman, I can understand your struggle.
Do your daily stressors, inner critique, and unhealed trauma leave you feeling defeated and unseen? Does this get in the way of your healing process, or affect your current relationships? Life is not meant to be tackled alone, especially in today's world, which is full of overwhelming stressors and increasing disconnectedness; both disconnection from ourselves, and others. In providing a non-judgmental, affirming space for you, we can explore your story, struggles, and strengths together, at a pace that feels safe for you. Are you also constantly having to navigate multiple marginalized identities?

Life is full of challenges. Some break us down to tears. I believe therapy is a safe place for us to sit down and examine your life. In therapy, we work on sorting out feelings, reflecting on self and what happened, and eventually overcoming the obstacles. I am happy to be the person to sit down with you and listen to whatever issues you are facing. Therapy may not be easy, but when you are ready to tackle these challenges, I will be there to support you.

Do you feel overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, or defeat as a result of trauma or a significant life change? Maybe a relationship has ended or a new phase of life has just begun. Perhaps you’re living with the long-term effects of abuse, assault, or other traumatic experience. You may feel unsafe & out of control of your life or emotions, anxious about even the smallest things, or like you just can’t find your footing. Eventually, these things start to overflow into other areas of life: your relationships, work, and decisions about the future. And yet, despite how hard things are right now, you know there’s more to life than this.

I have a passion for working with and supporting people. I'm not the type of therapist who sits quietly, hands crossed, saying "mmm-hmm, how are you feeling?" I’m interactive and engage, and will provide you with a confidential, comfortable and safe space for you to talk, ask questions, and share your feelings and emotions. Together, we will work to develop the tools to help you through this journey called life. With my compassion, support, friendliness, and added touch of humor we will team to work through the difficulties or problems you are experiencing.

I have been working and teaching in the mental health field for the past 20 years and have helped many people grow, live a more authentic life and form stronger bonds with the ones they love. I believe a good therapeutic relationship forms the foundation from which emotional growth and change occur. I create a warm, playful and collaborative environment where your thoughts and feelings can be safely experienced and explored. Ultimately, a good experience in therapy should help you to become more yourself and feel more secure in who that is.

While you can't always avoid the challenges that arise in your life, you do have choices about how you address them. My approach draws from the idea that there is much to learn from these struggles, and that by decreasing the self-criticism and shame that make it hard for you to face yourself, you can create opportunities to see yourself more authentically. This process is supported with compassion and understanding for all the ways you have needed to hide and protect your vulnerable self. You can have clarity about setting boundaries and making decisions. You can start to feel more alive and have more freedom to be more "You!"

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
