I have experience working with a variety of presenting issues, including but not limited to: depression , anxiety, life transitions/adjustments, sexual orientation, chronic illness, trauma/abuse, early childhood disorders, creative artist challenges, and relationships.
I provide my clients with a safe and professional environment in which to explore areas of concern, difficulty, and strength. It is my belief that there are times in life when we feel stuck, or are experiencing suffering, and need support in order to move through and/or change patterns that are no longer of use. Sometimes it is necessary to access guidance from a professional outside of the current situation in order to assist in gaining perspective. Through this collaboration, it is possible to gain insight and awareness that allows one to move forward with awareness and options.

Life can be isolating when it's just you vs. your struggles. As YOUR therapist, I help you transform your pain into personal power when your anxiety or depression takes over at the worst possible moments. It's confusing wrestling with day-to-day anger, pain & loss. This period of time can feel overwhelming & crippling. It may affect your relationships with family, friends colleagues & yourself. As Alder says, “courage does not happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life.” How do you courageously face the difficult questions & reclaim your strength?

Finding a safe space to really be heard, so we can process, heal and grow is helpful. Feeling isolated, depressed , anxious or unable to face daily challenges is normal, but finding ways to handle the stress or difficult feelings when they become overwhelming can make life easier and bring about more success and happiness. Sometimes it's stress within a relationship (family, dating, marriage, parenting) that can really throw us off our game. Sometimes work is overwhelming. At times social situations feel like too much. Sometimes everything seems to get us down.

If you are struggling with severe anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, PTSD, and the often accompanying depression , and are ready for specialized treatment, I can help. You may have already tried medications and learned techniques to quiet your mind but if you are still anxious, and also depressed , it is a good idea to consider a form of therapy targeted to these issues.

I use a tailored approach to help individuals working through attachment trauma, self-esteem, life transitions, disordered eating, negative body image, depression , anxiety, relationship/dating issues, and grief.
I believe what leads people to seek therapy is falling into the same, unhelpful patterns over and over again. These patterns can show up in our relationship to ourselves, to food, to substances, and to people. I approach therapy with the genuine belief that all people are worthy and capable of breaking these patterns and creating healthy relationships with themselves, with food and with others. My clients report the ability to identify and to challenge negative self-beliefs that get in their way and to create a new set of skills that enable them to build resiliency and an empowered sense of self.

I enjoy working with adolescents and adults and specialize in treating anxiety, depression , identity and relationship concerns, and trauma.
One of the fundamental aspects of a quality therapy experience is the relationship between therapist and client and the space to develop insight and emotional awareness. This means creating an environment that feels safe, having room for curiosity and openness, and having a therapist that is attuned to your goals and needs. My integrative therapeutic approach is aimed at uniquely addressing each individual in order to cultivate healing and growth.

I have had training and experience in several types of therapy; psychodynamic, dream work, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-based psychotherapy which uses meditation as a complement. Most of my clients are experiencing depression , anxiety or going through a life crisis/transition. I enjoy using books and readings to concretely extend the therapy to life outside the sessions. A special interest is working with writers to faciliate their creative process. And I find humor is very important in therapy as in life.

My specialty areas include treating depression , anxeity, couples' issues, creativity blocks (particularly for artists such as writers) and stress reduction.
By the time clients reach my door, they've often felt stuck--either individually or relationally--for quite some time. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to help people to identify the factors that are keeping them from moving forward and the steps that it will take to change the status quo. I work with clients in an active yet compassionate way to help them to achieve their goals. Also, I'm often able to help clients to access greater inspiration and support from whatever type of spirituality they've experienced.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
