In general, I see
children
to work on issues the
child
or parent identifies as important for change.
I am a clinical psychologist who works with
children
and adolescents in individual and group psychotherapy, and I conduct neuropsychological and educational evaluations. I am interested in working with individuals on developing healthy relationships with self, family, peers, and school. I consider each person a component of a family system and each family system as a part of school and community systems. Therefore, I value the insights of parents and teachers and understand healthy communication feeds emotional well-being, relationship success, and academic achievement. I believe that strong people are built on the shoulders of the people who surround them.

I have worked with clients in English/Spanish helping adults with co-occurring disorders, at-risk youth,
children
, adolescents and veterans, with exposure to trauma, neglect, abuse, and parents with parenting issues. Working with these clients early on in my career motivated me to help those who cannot help themselves. Working as a therapist is a rewarding experience as well as a privilege to be invited into another person's life. I find that in joining clients on their journey to make changes and overcome the difficulties in their lives it enables them to discover their best self.

I am a Marriage, family,
child
therapist and have a PsyD in psychoanalysis. I have been in practice for almost 30+ years. Although I am well versed and trained in many techniques, including the short term behavioral oriented ones, my orientation always leads me to a psychodynamic lens. By this I mean that I will always use the context, both current and historical, including family of origin, to inform the work and deepen my understanding of anyone I embark on a path of working in partnership with toward the general goals of reducing pain, increasing joy and broadening one's life choices.

I have worked internationally with
children
, teens, & adults for over 20 years, & have extensive experience with grief/bereavement, crisis intervention, health-related trauma & challenges, as well as other mental health issues, including depression & anger-management.
I believe that at times we all get sad, down, bummed-out, etc… but nobody needs to be depressed; I believe that therapy need not be: - intimidating; uncomfortable; awkward; unsafe; labeling/diagnostic, OR indoors; I believe that life can be really challenging, especially for those who try to get through it alone; I believe that nobody should even attempt to get through it alone; I believe that "craziness" is in the eye of the beholder & each of us is crazy in our own uniquely beautiful ways..

I graduated from Antioch University Los Angeles with a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology specializing in
Child
Studies.
A native to Los Angeles I get it; the constant hustle, traffic, the grind of working to pay for life not psychotherapy. I know you’ve got valid reasons for why this isn’t the best time for therapy, but I’m calling your bluff. You’re not too busy, too old, too Black, or too broken. This is “right time” because there will never be a right time to get well. This is your moment. I’m going to say you’ve slowed down just enough to feel; running errands with tears streaming down your face. Hating your spouse, your kids, but hating yourself more because you’re still hurting, still invisible, still in your trauma. My primary focus is kids

Your
child
is a source of light. But perhaps you've noticed their light has dimmed recently and you feel concerned. Perhaps your teen is falling behind in school, having difficulty connecting with their friends, or experiencing confusion as they explore their gender identity. Your young
child
may be having anger outbursts or challenges with their behavior at home. Adjusting to the ever-changing COVID-19 lifestyle might be causing worries and changes in mood or personality. Or your
child
might have experienced a major stressor like divorce, a death in the family, or even a traumatic event like a car accident or an act of violence.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
