Hi there, I'm Michelle, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a background in Theatre Arts. I have experience working with adolescents, adults, and children in a variety of settings. I prefer to work with populations 18 years and older, specifically dealing with anxiety/depressive symptoms. My approach to psychotherapy varies and is dependent on "where the client is" as well as what the situation calls for. Although I prefer Family systems, Existential and Person-centered approaches toward therapy, I am flexible with respect to my approaches and often merge theatrical and theoretical techniques.

Nowdays seeking help can be scary, terrifying, and overwhelming primarily due to stereotypes and biases of getting help from a mental health therapist. I invite you to ask yourself, if you are struggling with daily stressors, grief and loss, fear, anxiety, depression and panic attacks? Do you experience difficulty adjusting to changes, new challenges, the loss of a loved one/pet or job, separation/divorce? Is your toddler/teenager acting out and rebelling? Do you feel unsupported by your spouse, friends, and family? Do you feel alone, helpless, and hopeless with the demands of your day to day life? Get help, get well, and live well!

As a Latina/mother/daughter/wife, I understand the difficulty of making time to prioritize my wellness. As people of color we often hear " we have gone through worse and didn't need therapy" "our people don't need therapy, thats a white thing" "tu no estas loca." These expressions are meant to celebrate the resiliency of our people but beneath the surface they are damaging. By denying our humanity, we downplay the effects mental illness can have on us, our family and our community. We ignore our own pain and suffering, in an effort to show our "strength."

Relationships are at the heart of our lives—when they feel off, everything else can feel harder. Whether with a partner, parent, child, or yourself, challenges are part of being human. Therapy can help untangle struggles, feel understood, and reconnect with yourself and others. I help individuals, couples, and families through life changes, emotional overwhelm, or feeling stuck. This includes working through conflict, preparing for marriage, improving family communication, or supporting teens and adults with anxiety, low self-esteem, or major transitions.

You’re thoughtful, curious, maybe even a little emotionally intense. You’ve reflected on your own, but you’re ready to explore more deeply. Many of my clients are navigating through relationship struggles, identity questions, emotional pain, or blocks around their creativity and self-expression. They’re often the ones who carry a lot for others and are now ready to be seen themselves. If that’s you, therapy can help you begin to shift the patterns that feel stuck, frustrating, or hard to name. Whether you’re new to therapy or returning after time away, I offer a grounded, collaborative space where we can do the work together.

My ideal clients come from all walks of life, but they share a common desire to feel more grounded, connected, and emotionally balanced. They may be dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship struggles, grief, or major life transitions. Some seek therapy to heal deep emotional wounds, while others are looking to better understand themselves, improve their relationships, or make meaningful changes in their lives. What they want most is a safe space to be heard and supported, and a clear path toward healing and growth. They’re ready to do the work—it just helps to not do it alone.

Hermosillo Family Therapy was founded on providing accessible mental health services to the Los Angeles community. Dra. Desiree Hermosillo, PsyD, LMFT, leads our practice. She is a Mexican-American psychotherapist born and raised in Los Angeles, and is passionate about giving back to the community that raised her. She started this group practice while in her doctoral program. Why do I always say "yes" when I want to say "no"? How come my thoughts are so negative and I assume the worst in people? Why am I so negative about myself but not others? Why do I keep making the same mistake over and over again? Sometimes despite having some awareness of challenges you face, effecting change and improving your quality of life hasn't been successful. Trying to understand yourself or loved ones has been an uphill battle for you. Positivity, peace, congruence, confidence are all things you seek and you yearn for a path to be your most authentic self without fear of rejection.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Covina?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
