Ten years of teaching yoga, meditation, and improvisational comedy, in addition to extensive experience working with
substance use
and eating disorders, provides me with a well-rounded toolset to bring to therapy.
Our relationships, with ourselves and others, are one of the biggest determinants of our overall health. Yet, many of us find ourselves profoundly lonely. Therapy provides the safe space to identify and address the factors standing in the way of your best life. I applaud the bravery it takes to ask for help, look at your wounds, and to do the work to heal from them. Whether you’re troubled by relationship issues, addiction, eating disorders, anxiety, or depression, I consider it an honor to walk alongside you during this difficult time in your life.

Making the time for yourself to feel happier, to alleviate stress or anxiety, to find meaning in your life or to improve your relationships- these are all some of the reasons that people decide to enter therapy. In today’s world we are all confronted with many existential issues that can make us question our purpose in life. Therapy is an act of self-care and an investment into yourself to find how to get the most out of your life, to feel happier, more connected and fulfilled. I have worked in a variety of settings over 15 years in this field.

Are you feeling lonely, sad, angry, or unhappy in your relationships? Do you worry about your or someone else's alcohol or drug use?
Substance Use
Disorder often impacts individuals and families in painful + predictable ways that trap people in destructive cycles of interaction that lead to trauma and persistent feelings of anxiety, loneliness, anger, helplessness, and despair. You are not alone if your efforts to manage and move beyond the chaos and frustration of addiction have fallen short of your expectations. Don't lose hope! People do get better, and relationships can be repaired!

Sometimes when we are feeling down we mask our pain with a smile. We do this because it is easier to pretend everything is okay, not realizing it’s okay to not be okay. Understanding that, I create a safe space by establishing boundaries, offering hope, and skilled guidance to explore these issues. My goal is to provide knowledgeable, individualized, compassionate care in a supportive, client-centered therapeutic environment; while providing knowledge and resources to empower clients to live their best life! I’m Dr. Laura Petracek, a Clinical Psychologist and author with over 30 years of experience in the field of psychotherapy.

Life can be incredibly hard, and there is no "manual" for how to navigate life's overwhelming situations and complex emotional experiences. During these tough times, it's common to feel "stuck" and desperately wanting solutions, while struggling to identify them on your own. At this juncture, the objectivity, support, and insight of a licensed clinical psychologist can help you to move through this time in your life. I have witnessed this process, personally, and helped many clients persevere through intense periods of conflict and pain.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
