Your Mental Health Matters, my goal is to be your guide, confidante and empathetic listening ear while you figure out what you want, what you need and how to get your life in a position where you feel fulfilled and balanced. The world can be a chaotic and stressful place. I am here to help anyone who is willing to process and explore their emotions to heal. The only goal to start with is making the call or sending the e-mail to ask for help. Speaking and hearing your truth can be scary but is necessary for the process of healing to begin. It's all about relationships, starting with your relationship to yourself, your family of origin, your partner, children, friends. And then there's the relationship to your problems: things like depression, anxiety, ADHD, post-partum and parenting stress, body-image problems. How do you work with the set of challenges that life hands you? I work with clients to understand themselves and their own story, and then apply that understanding, in the form of coping and problem-solving skills, to their relationships, to get through life's pain and into a life worth living.

Having spent the past 8 years, working with individuals on this journey, on a daily basis, as Program Director for Center Discovery's Adolescent Residential Treatment Center for Eating Disorders, and as Clinical Director at Monte Nido & Affiliates Adult Residential Treatment Center for Eating Disorders, I can offer the specialized support and guidance.
Treating individuals who struggle with an eating disorder takes a provider who has extensive experience in the treatment of eating disorders. One who understands the complexity and power of the eating disorder, and the patience and understanding that is needed to support an individual on the challenging journey towards recovery, maintaining recovery, and relapse prevention. Most often, this journey involves not only the client, but their family and support system as well.

Whether you’re a family trying to connect, a teen struggling with transitions in life, a young mother trying to find herself again, or find yourself dealing with some other challenging changes, I can help.
Something’s changed. That change can be any number of things - recent baby, newly out of or into middle school/high school, change in family dynamics, or others. But something has changed and it doesn’t feel right. You used to feel like you had it together - like you were writing your own story and happy with where it was going. But lately, it doesn’t feel that way. Lately, it feels like there’s an editor changing things in your story and it’s not working out! You feel lost, maybe depressed, anxious or angry, or maybe you’re not sure what you feel, just that something’s not right.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
