You're checking all the boxes, but something still feels off. You might carry a quiet sense of exhaustion, feel disconnected, or wonder if this is really all there is. The strategies you've used to keep it together are failing. My ideal clients are individuals craving a space to untangle the deeper roots of this isolation. At my practice, I provide depth-oriented therapy to help you understand why you feel this way, not just how to ignore it, so you can start living with genuine purpose rather than just going through the motions.

The effectiveness of psychotherapy depends on the ability of the client and the therapist to establish a therapeutic connection. More to the point, good therapy is dependent upon good communication which requires the therapist to be open and responsive to your worries and concerns as well as to hear you even when your own awareness may be muffled by pain, anger, anxiety and disappointment. My job is to find the hope your bring to treatment and to assist you to find creative ways to approach your life's challenges with a renewed and joyful sense of resolve.

The human experience often includes seasons of feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, empty, or disconnected. You do not have to face them alone. My ideal clients are working adults navigating the pressures of career, relationships, and life in general. They come to therapy facing depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, grief, trauma, or patterns they don't fully understand. We'll explore insight into what's driving the struggle and develop the internal steadiness to handle life's weight and move toward a more authentic, fulfilling life, not by erasing the hardship, but by increasing the capacity to carry it well.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve your therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Why might an individual seek a male therapist?
Clients, particularly men, may look for a male therapist because they may share life experiences that help them connect well and understand each other more immediately. Some men might feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about gender-specific issues, such as fatherhood or the social pressures around masculinity. Men who have experienced trauma or abuse, sexual or otherwise, may find it more comfortable to talk through their memories of these experiences with a male therapist. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

Is therapy different for men and women?
Therapy can be different for men and women insofar as gender plays a role in the challenges an individual faces and the events in life an individual has experienced. Men often face different expectations from their families, friends, and society than women do. In some cases, men might feel most comfortable expressing themselves differently from how women do. Talking about one’s feelings and emotions is a critical part of most therapies, and some men might find it comes more naturally when talking to a male therapist. Ultimately, though, therapeutic treatment should be tailored to the individual’s specific needs.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
