I primarily see patients for testing including evaluation of mood, personality, cognition and behavior. Such an evaluation usually includes a formal interview, a review of medical and/or educational/vocational records, interviews of significant others (as necessary), and neuropsychological testing using standardized neuropsychological instruments. This type of testing offers many benefits: Often neuropsychological assessment will aid in the proper and accurate diagnosis of the patient’s illness and/or the etiology of their concerns. This helps a person better understand themselves and acquire tools for better coping in life.

I have been working with survivors of trauma for 20 years, Trauma steals our life away and causes us to relive the pain of the past and fear the future. I want to walk with you through the pain to a place of freedom and choice. It takes courage to face our pain, the journey is often long and may feel hopeless. I invite you to try and trust one more time and see if we can find that place of peace and healing. You deserve the chance for something different, something for you.

Whether overwhelmed by a problem or feelings that cannot be fully understood, troubled by a failing relationship, or experiencing diminished ability to be effective in everyday routines, I would consider myself honored to be trusted with your vulnerability and pain, and help you to achieve positive change in your life.
VIDEO SESSIONS AVAILABLE FOR ALL CLIENTS . . . . . Initiating therapy can be a daunting and challenging process, and that begins with selecting a therapist around whom you will feel comfortable, safe and respected. To help you with that process, I'll start by sharing a few things about myself. I became a therapist because I discovered that it was a large part of who I am. Even at an early age, I found that I was often the person others felt safe to let their guard down with - to share what was happening below the surface, and to seek out my advice.

You are at a point in your life where you're feeling off, feeling bad. Something isn't quite right. You might be depressed, lonely, unhappy about your relationships, dissatisfied about a job, or generally nervous and stressed. You may have been suffering for quite a while or maybe these feelings are newer, perhaps due to a recent event. Whatever the reason, you are here now and seeking help. Reaching out is difficult to do and can be frightening. It may feel like a risk to place your trust in someone.

Finding the right therapist for you can feel daunting! You might wonder if it's possible for someone to really get you & if opening up is worth the risk. I connect well with those who feel set apart from those around them or have difficulty connecting with others. We come to know & understand ourselves in the context of relationships. Without authentic connections, we can end up feeling really stuck - disconnected from those around us & from ourselves. Through the experience of being with another person in a safe & accepting space, the therapeutic relationship offers a unique & meaningful opportunity for self-discovery & healing.

I had the great privilege of training with Virginia Satir, a pioneer in a Systems approach to therapy. This approach examines how early learning in the family-of-origin, affects present day behavior. The many concepts she shared about people, how we can change and grow, have have been influential to me personally and inform my work. My wish is to share with others how to better communicate, improve relationships with self and others and, not only better cope with life challenges, but thrive. I join with clients to create a safe atmosphere where people can risk and grow.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
