A mentor once told me, "We can't negotiate the terms of our own surrender," and that has framed my approach toward acceptance and healing as we live life on life's terms. Sometimes we need to take a step back to reflect on a new way to approach situations when "our way" seems to be getting in our way. I invite you to bring awareness to what brought you to this page and if the above message resonates, let's chat.

I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, or addiction who are seeking a compassionate and understanding space to address their challenges. Many of the people I support face cultural or military-related concerns, severe mental health conditions, or difficulties with social skills. They strive to manage symptoms, enhance emotional regulation, improve interpersonal effectiveness, and achieve a sense of overall well-being. These individuals are motivated to engage in therapy, open to evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, and CPT and are committed to creating positive changes in their lives.

Men tell themselves a story about themselves. It's built from lived experience, observance of others, and sometimes that weird thing that happened on a playground when you were eight. These stories can often be wildly inaccurate and harmful. Moreover, they tell you to be someone you don't want to be. You get further away from the life you want. If you find yourself repeating the same destructive behaviors, maybe it's time to change them.

A lot of men walk around carrying more than they ever say out loud. They stay busy. Push through. Keep it moving. From the outside, it looks like they’ve got it handled. But underneath? Stress. Pressure. Frustration. Disconnection. A constant mental loop that doesn’t shut off. And the worst part—no one really knows. If you’re used to carrying everything on your own, therapy probably isn’t your first move. You’ve likely told yourself you should be able to figure it out, push through it, or just deal with it. That works—until it doesn’t.

I am Dr. Carmelo Isales, a psychotherapist, specializing in marital and family dynamics, and founder of Prism Family Counseling INC. I am aware of what it means to lose, to rebuild, and to transform pain into self-worth. I have learned through 20 years of practice, that the strength of treatment usually involves the discovery of parental wounds and its impact on current family functioning. I specifically use a safe triadic approach with mother, children, and father together if available. I can also use the same approaches in individual sessions to promote the release of traumatic distress.

Other common areas related to my focus revolve around men's issues in life, relationships, and work.
Porn addiction can slowly wear down the trust in a relationship, leaving one partner feeling deeply hurt and inadequate, and the other trapped in guilt, secrecy, and broken promises no matter how hard they try to stop. With time, many couples notice increasing distance or even a sense of betrayal. If this feels familiar, you are not alone. What may start as ordinary screen time or scrolling social media can gradually shift into porn sites, cam sites, or OnlyFans and turn into a pattern that feels very hard to control, even for men who are highly disciplined in other areas of their lives.

Mission Viejo, CA 92691
I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, broken relationships, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, financial recklessness, and gambling. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

Other common areas related to my focus revolve around men's issues in life, relationships, and work.
Porn addiction can quietly erode trust in a relationship, leaving one partner feeling hurt and inadequate while the other feels caught in a cycle of guilt, secrecy, and broken promises despite all their willpower. Over time, this often leads to growing disconnection or even a sense of betrayal. If this is your reality, you are not alone. What often begins as normal screen use or social media can gradually progress into porn sites, cam sites, or OnlyFans and become a pattern that is difficult to control, even for men who are disciplined in every other area of life.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
