A mentor once told me, "We can't negotiate the terms of our own surrender," and that has framed my approach toward acceptance and healing as we live life on life's terms. Sometimes we need to take a step back to reflect on a new way to approach situations when "our way" seems to be getting in our way. I invite you to bring awareness to what brought you to this page and if the above message resonates, let's chat.

You've probably Googled "how to have a better relationship" at 11pm. I get it. Maybe you're engaged and want to actually do this right, not just survive the wedding, but build something that holds. Maybe you've noticed that the way you fight (or don't fight) looks a little too familiar, like something you learned long before you had a choice. Maybe you're about to become parents and you're equal parts excited and terrified about what that's going to do to you two. I work with couples who are ready to stop repeating old patterns and start building something intentional. Let's work together to really build the intimacy you crave.

Even the best days of our lives come with unexpected changes, challenges or realizations that events or traumas from our past have come to prevent us from truly feeling like we are living the life we have really envisioned for ourselves. Sometimes even with the support of those closest to us, we can't seem to find a way to face these issues on our own so we make a decision to seek out another source of support through therapy. If you're looking to start your therapy journey for the first time or continuing it from where you left off previously - I hope to be able to help support you as you embark on this journey towards your goals.

With whatever therapeutic focus we're working on, I use humanistic/existential perspectives as well as other relevant practices (CBT, DBT, ACT, etc).
The hardest part of mental health struggles can often be how lonely and tiring it all feels. Complicated relationships, low mood or motivation, and pressure from yourself and everyone else become an overwhelming ocean in which to stay afloat. You need someone to join you where you are and help hold the heaviness. I will accept, support, and challenge you in order to keep you connected with where you want to be. I approach work and life being person-centered, trauma-informed, feminist, and systems-aware. We're going to explore not just you as an individual, but your entire story and its contexts.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
