However, a great deal of my experience and training has focused on parenting , grief, cancer-related issues for those with cancer and their families, divorce, relationship issues, adolescents, and anxiety.
Choosing a therapist can be overwhelming and confusing. It's hard to know who to choose when there are so many therapists out there. I can help answer questions you have about therapy, and help you find what you're looking for. Therapy works when there's a connection between you and the therapist, you feel understood, not judged, and safe. It's important to find someone you are comfortable with and has experience with your particular concern. I can help point you in the right direction.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience specializing in anxiety, depression, maternal mental health, women’s issues, life transitions, and parenting . Through my experience, I’ve learned to base my practice around what science calls the negativity bias. This is the notion that when we struggle, we are neurobiologically wired to make sense of our struggle by creating a negative story around it. The negativity bias often keeps us feeling defeated, broken and not good enough.

Besides psychotherapy, I provide parent training, child custody mediation, and work in a multidisciplinary team as a divorce coach and child expert in the collaborative divorce process to prevent emotional damage to all parties going through divorce, especially children.
As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, I believe that people's emotions and behaviors are influenced by their perceptions and interpretation of events. I work collaboratively with my clients in a proactive manner in order for them to learn effective strategies that they can use for the rest of their lives. I also believe that we are influenced by the cultural context in which we grow up. All relationships are, to some extent, are contextual and intercultural. People often face new challenges as they go through transitions in their lives. I bring my life experiences and professional knowledge to therapy.

I individualize my approach and use a variety of modalities to help clients develop strengths and achieve their life goals. When working with couples, I facilitate development of healthy communication techniques, conflict resolution skills, and awareness of defenses. My couples therapy work has spanned 20 years. In addition to the attraction and happiness of being a couple, there are always challenges. I use an interactional model to help you understand the sources of difficulties so that you can emerge from therapy with ways of solving conflicts. I have worked with couples who are thinking of moving in or marrying, are married or living together, are considering divorce. are divorcing or are in post divorce situations. Parenting issues are an area of particular interest to me.

I’m a play therapist, get teens, and have special training in co- parenting , reunification, recovery, anger management, eating disorder, and collaborative divorce.
Chaos and heartbreak in relationships bring people to me. They are angry and confused as they face both a hidden crisis and the loss of support or connection. Some do not have a choice – there are lawyers or social workers, and orders and mandates to address. Many are filled with shame and self-doubt, so we begin with what I know even before we meet – “your feelings are real” and “you are not losing it – you have been overwhelmed.” You are struggling to accept what you cannot change, but we may help you find the power to seize control of what you can. Whether “you” is an individual or a relationship that seems hopelessly broken.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
