I offer a free 15-minute consultation and work with adults, seniors, and couples online throughout California and Arizona.
Somewhere along the way, the life you imagined started to feel out of reach. Maybe it's anxiety that lives in your body before your brain even registers why. Maybe it's a relationship cycling through the same painful patterns — or experiences you've carried for years without knowing how to set them down. You've tried pushing through. You've done the reading. And still, something keeps pulling you back. What if the missing piece isn't working harder, but finally understanding how your brain and nervous system have been responding — and giving them something better?

Hello there.....My name is Maria Paola Cortes Elser, I was born in Colombia and have been living in the USA for 23 years now, and as an immigrant, I confronted different situations that helped me to grow personally, and spiritually and understand how special it is to be from somewhere else and become part of this extraordinary country. I understand the challenges that come from this transition from different land to America and all the life experiences that those changes include, mentally culturally and spiritually.

Knowing firsthand how transformative therapy can be, I became a mental health clinician to help others uncover their inner strength and navigate life’s challenges. I hold a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy (MMFT) from the University of San Francisco (2020), specializing in Counseling Psychology, and I support teens and adults (16+) facing anxiety, trauma, and identity-related concerns. I’m continually inspired by the resilience I witness as clients heal, gain clarity, and move toward lives that feel more grounded and aligned with who they truly are.

Anxiety can leave you overthinking conversations, questioning your role in relationships, or feeling unsettled during life transitions. I hold a Master’s in Counseling (MC) from Palo Alto University (2021), and my path into this field began with my own desire to better understand myself and the dynamics of relationships through personal therapy. That experience inspired a genuine commitment to sit with adults (18+) in vulnerable moments, and I remain continually inspired by clients and colleagues as I deepen the care I provide.

I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who is passionate about helping adults better understand themselves and grow through life’s challenges. My background in child welfare allowed me to work closely with children and families, which gave me a deep understanding of trauma, emotional patterns, and how our early experiences can shape us well into adulthood. Today, I focus on working one-on-one with adults, creating a safe and supportive space where you can slow down, reflect, and gain a deeper understanding of yourself.

Are you feeling stuck in your relationship, trying everything you can but ending up in the same painful patterns? Or are you worried about your teen, sensing something is off but not sure how to reach her? I work especially with women who are deeply invested in their relationships but feel emotionally exhausted, and teens who are struggling. When you are so close to the situation, it can be difficult to see clearly or know what will actually help. Therapy offers a space to slow down and understand what is happening, so you can move forward with a better sense of your next steps.

I believe my communication style is calm and gentle, while still being direct. I do my best to provide a nonjudgmental space wherein the clients I work with can feel comfortable sharing their concerns. I will also challenge clients when appropriate, to allow them to develop insight into ways they can change their thoughts or behaviors in a way that would be helpful for them.

Trauma can leave you feeling constantly on guard, disconnected from yourself or others, or caught in patterns that are hard to name. You may notice parts of you shutting down, taking over, or feeling far away, especially if you’ve lived through complex or ongoing trauma. I earned my MS from California State University, Northridge in 2011, and my clinical focus has centered on understanding how trauma shapes the nervous system, identity, and sense of safety. I help adults navigating C-PTSD, PTSD, and dissociation begin to make sense of their internal experiences and reconnect with a steadier sense of self.

Anxiety, depression, and PTSD can quietly shape how you relate to yourself and others, often leaving you feeling disconnected or unsure how to move forward. As a first-generation Latina, I’ve always felt a strong pull to give back to my community and support meaningful change in people’s lives. I earned my MSW from Cal State LA in 2018, and I’m inspired by the strength and courage I witness as individuals navigate their mental health journeys. Care focuses on helping you deepen self-understanding, strengthen relationships, and respond to challenges with greater clarity and compassion.

Pregnancy and the related milestones are so celebrated around you that it’s hard for you to talk to anyone about the emotional pain you are in. Maybe past experiences have made this season terrifying. You felt excitement at those first kicks, but now you worry when they change. You researched and planned endlessly yet fear follows you most of the day. If you’ve delivered, when your baby arrived, you expected joy but felt guilt as anxiety crept in. Fits of rage took over. Sleepless nights and constant demands left you overwhelmed, even jealous of others’ rest. Some moments you feel connected to your child, but mostly you feel lost.

I work with people who carry the imprint of trauma and early attachment wounds. Feeling invisible while trying to appease others, experiencing sudden waves of anxiety, or growing familiar with loneness are just some of the ways trauma can linger in our bodies and lives. I offer a space where you can feel safe to show up as you are—with vulnerability and honesty. Through genuine attunement, I support people in reconnecting with themselves, releasing patterns rooted in survival, and cultivating a deeper sense of safety and aliveness.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
