Certified Sex Therapist; PsyD in Marriage & Family Therapy from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology; Treatment of Sexual Assault Survivors via Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy training from Strength United.
Are relationships supposed to be this hard? When sexual issues keep you from maintaining or obtaining a happy relationship it's time to see a sex therapist. As a sex & relationship specialist, I successfully treat people with issues surrounding sexual desire & performance, sexual trauma, problems with arousal or orgasm, differences in the amount of sex they'd like to have, & sexual pain disorders such as vaginismus. I assist clients in building intimacy by deepening their mutual understanding & compassion (for their often very opposite mate!) and help them stay accountable for taking positive action to improve relationships.

Clients who experienced neglect, emotional abuse, sexual abuse or other sudden and traumatic events and as adults are suffering from anxiety, depression, phobia, insomnia, anger, drug addiction and relational issues are able to heal by processing these past traumatic events.
Traumatic events causes one to develop negative beliefs about oneself or the world. These experiences become fixed in the body-mind in form of negative emotions causing anger, depression, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, panic, anxiety, phobias, shame, low self-esteem which can create difficulties with your relationships at home and at work. I use EMDR to heal the deep wounds of traumatic childhood events which are the source that one may believe that he/she is not a good enough person, not loveable, does not deserve to be loved or trusted. Negative self beliefs and negative emotions effects our body and mind causing physical and emotional distress.

Clients I see are often experiencing feelings that are disrupting their lives. You may be one of the many people who has a hard time acknowledging, asking for & accepting assistance. Therapy can help with many problems life presents such as relationship difficulties with partners, family & friends; death of a loved one; job loss; caring for someone ill; assault ; rape; witnessing a crime, & other life issues. Others come to gain insight into how to make their lives better, more productive & happier. For 20 years I have helped people "get out of their own way" and see how they unknowingly sabotage themselves & relationships.

My area of expertise is in the field of trauma, particularly the kind of trauma associated with childhood sexual abuse .
What I do is help clients identify and understand thoughts and beliefs they have that keep them from feeling good about themselves and get in the way of living life to its fullest. Each individual has a unique view of the world and relationships etched out of our early experience. If those experiences are good enough, then one is able to meet life's challenges, but if these experiences are wrought with dysfunction and trauma, meeting these challenges is much more difficult and one may require assistance from a professional who can safely facilitate exploration of the obstacles to fulfillment.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
