Twenty five years ago my 3-year-old-middle son was asked, "What does your Daddy do?" He smiled and answered, "He helps people find their feelings."
I still do.
I work with individuals,
couples
and families across the life span (but not with children younger than 13). I facilitate change through dialogue and the existential process of defining life through purposeful, authentic, and clearly authored choice.

I work primarily with adults and teens who are experiencing depression, anxiety, panic attacks, grief, self-injury, low self-esteem,
relationship
issues, gender dysphoria, psychosis, and life transitions.
Most people come to me when problems have become unbearable. They feel alone and stuck and powerless to do anything about it. They come in hoping I can tell them what they need to do to feel better. I provide support and guidance so that my patients do not have to bear their struggles alone. We work collaboratively to understand what is not working and why. We examine past patterns of experience to help us to understand current feelings and behaviors. By addressing the underlying issues that are creating problems, we can create lasting change and transformation.

I am here for you. As we walk through life, we often carry a load of complex feelings and unresolved baggage on our shoulders. Sometimes, the weight of it all can be unbearable. This makes life harder than it has to be, especially when we are already trying to do our best with what we find in ourselves. As a therapist, I believe that a
relationship
with an attentive, caring, and nonjudgmental person can provide security and strength to explore our inner processes that sometimes seem stuck and unclear. Therapy will be a safe place to practice shedding light on the parts that you'd like more understanding, healing, growth, and change.

Our sexuality is at the core of who we are as humans, and where we came from – it is our life force. It’s also at the core of our own identity. So many of us are searching for who we truly are. We’re so encapsulated in who we should be being for others, that we end up losing ourselves. This shows up most frequently in intimate relationships. Our desire for unconditional love from another supersedes our need for physical connection. Emotion trumps sexuality. And what goes on within our mind shuts down the abilities of our body. Are you feeling lost in your
relationship
? Do you desire more sexually?

In my experience, approaching treatment with the dual aim of increasing insight and self-awareness as well as behavior modification and tangible goals yields the best results. Ram Dass said, "Remember your Buddha nature... and your social security number." I strive to offer both reflective as well as pragmatic resources. If we decide to work together, we will identify the specific issues that brought you to seek help and keep your therapy focused on these issues. We all get stuck, whether it be in unwanted behaviors, an unhealthy
relationship
, emotional ruts, or just stuck in ourselves. Let's talk and see if we might be a match.

I work with a wide range of clients, and especially with
couples
in cultivating intimacy and a shared sense of purpose, with men interested in recovering a sense of joy, and with expats and adults in the creative fields.
I offer support for individuals who are feeling stuck and looking to foster joy through better relationships. Together, we’ll build greater awareness around anxieties, fears, triggers, or conflicts that get in the way of connection with others. We’ll work to identify your needs and further develop skills to communicate them. We'll spend time calling attention to beliefs, "shoulds" and narratives that might no longer serve you. We'll find the things that get in the way of self-compassion, and unpack them together.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
