Thanks for stopping by, I'm Richard, and believe you are the expert on your life story and have many hidden strengths we can discover together to overcome life's obstacles and create positive outcomes, reduce stress and
anxiety
, cope with grief and loss, learn anger management, improve relationships, overcome PTSD, defeat depression, and control addictions.
Richard is a student at Harvard Medical School, becoming certified in Media and Medicine in addition to his extensive years studying clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, performance psychology, and mindfulness. His experience as a top producer’s assistant to Academy Award and Emmy Award winners has allowed him to best understand the demands of success while balancing career, family, and relationship goals. When one side of the scale becomes heavier than the other, it causes an imbalance creating disharmonious interpersonal interactions, leading to stress, anger, sadness, loneliness, and feeling unfulfilled in life.

I work with individual adults and couples, focusing on areas of grief, trauma, cancer, chronic illness, chronic pain,
anxiety
, relational dynamics, self-esteem, and major life transitions.
I believe that our journeys, through life's experiences and struggles, make us who we are. My own life's journey has led me to my career as a psychotherapist, which allows me the opportunity, honor, and privilege, to work together with my clients to realize their own strengths, limitations, and to identify and achieve their goals. I believe this can take place, within a strong therapeutic relationship, built on non-judgment, trust, safety, and compassion.

I work collaboratively in a safe, non-judgmental environment with life transitions, personal growth, divorce, depression,
anxiety
, grief and loss, relationships and parenting (straight, gay and single).
Are you struggling in your relationships or in other areas of your life? Are you depressed or anxious and don't understand why? In therapy we can focus on getting relief from your symptoms while exploring the underlying causes ultimately leading to meaningful changes. Behavior patterns formed in the past do not need to dictate the quality of your life in the present. Identifying these patterns in a highly interactive therapeutic relationship can lead you to a path of improved relationships and enhanced wellbeing.

I have expertise in helping individuals work through life transitions,
anxiety
, depression, relationship challenges, aspects of identity, difficulty finding intimacy, low self-esteem, and traumatic experiences.
With care, openness and a strong foundation in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, I help adults, adolescents, and couples find greater fulfillment and connection in their lives. I value the power of a strong therapeutic relationship rooted in trust, where feelings, histories, and the complex layers of an individual’s experiences can be explored. When encountering intense struggles in life, we don't always have the capacity or support to process our emotions. In these instances, as we try to move forward, we take with us whatever was unexpressed and unprocessed, and this often continues to impact us in a variety of ways.

I specialize in treating depression,
anxiety
, and trauma.
It is my passion to help others live happier, calmer, and more fulfilling lives. Much of our inexplicable behavior and habits that hold us back are rooted in our genes, childhood, family dynamics, traumas, and circumstances. I help my clients to understand what holds them back and move through it. I help them to overcome difficult transitions and parenting challenges. I help them to improve their relationships, change negative lifestyle habits, reduce stress, improve confidence and self-esteem, uncover their passions, and eventually become true selves.

I have been in the private practice of psychodynamic psychiatry for over three decades. I provide psychotherapy and prescribe medication only when indicated as an adjunct to your psychotherapy. You crave connection- in your relationships, at work, and most importantly, with yourself- yet you fear repeating the same self-sabotaging patterns and the same heartbreak you’ve always felt. You may want more from your important relationships, you may feel stuck in a complicated situation, or perhaps you are “starting over” all together. As beautiful as it is to crave love and to give it, it is crucial to be prepared to receive it as well. All of these relational challenges may cause feelings of
anxiety
, sadness, and confusion. It is essential to understand your own emotions, actions, and habits before sharing them with another.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
