As a former member of the Army National Guard, I witnessed firsthand the results of
trauma
and stress and the havoc that they can wreak on a person’s life. Counseling was a natural step into a field that has equipped me with the experience and knowledge to help people develop their inner strength, build deeper relationships with the people around them, and rediscover their joy. I have a heart for helping people arrive at this type of insight and change. In addition, I enjoy getting to learn from clients each day and the personal growth that comes with accompanying you on the journey toward healing.

I'm also a family therapist with the SAYFE program at Edgewood Center for Children and Families and was previously a clinician/consultant with UCSF HEARTS (Healthy Environments and Response to
Trauma
in Schools) in the Division of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychiatry at UCSF.
My practice is dedicated to the emotional and relational wellbeing of youth (preteens, teens, young adults) and families. With this in mind, I aim to create a safe space for shared reflection, build on existing strengths, and offer new tools to promote self-understanding, growth, and social and emotional resilience. My interventions and style are tailored to individual needs, but building a genuine, trusting, and supportive relationship is at the foundation of my work. Sessions may include a combination of talk, play, art, and movement, as well as other activities that create a safe space and facilitate the therapeutic process.

I specialize in working with women and transfolks struggling with anxiety or
trauma
, and am trained in EMDR, and IFS, approaches that can help reduce anxiety, stress, feeling on edge, or feeling hypervigilant.
Does it feel as if your world is getting smaller and smaller or harder and harder? You’re noticing you’re not going out and about the way you used to … or would like to. There are decisions you’d like to make, but you only have energy for distractions like binging Netflix, scrolling on your phone, or mindless eating. You’re on edge a lot of the time. You yearn for serenity and fulfillment, but you’re not sure how to get there on your own. You’ve tried, and then end up giving up, and even feeling worse as a result.

In working with anxiety and
trauma
, I use a somatic approach that will help you pay attention to internal cues and responses, and together we will work to develop tools to enable your nervous system come out of overwhelm and feel more at ease.
Psychotherapy is an opportunity for you to explore your experience in a space that is nonjudgmental, open, and supportive, and through this to discover more ease, as well as solutions to the challenges you are facing. It is a chance for you to look at thoughts, emotions, and conditioned responses to life and life events; untangle the knots of old beliefs and patterns that are no longer helpful; and take action to live a freer, more satisfying, and more authentic life. My approach is collaborative and experiential, and makes use of your already-existing strengths.

Do negative thoughts interfere with your self-esteem? relationships? moods? I can help. I specialize in helping women recognize & amplify inner resources to recover from
trauma
, anxiety, depression, and distress while attending to the important relationships in their lives. I inherently operate with a social justice lens, which means that therapy cannot be separated from familial, societal, and religious conditioning we experience as unique beings on this planet. As a mixed-heritage lesbian, I appreciate the ways internalized oppression can show up in our efforts to maintain mental and emotional health.

I specialize in working with individual adults, children, adolescents, and families using somatic methods that increase awareness of the body in the present moment. These methods allow past experiences that remain "stuck," within us to be contacted in the present and internal states can begin to shift. "Stories," or habitual patterns, that keep us from experiencing optimal well-being are interrupted and replaced with new possibilities. Somatic methods are effective in addressing a variety of treatment needs such as
trauma
, anxiety, depression as well as challenges with children and in families.

Therapy is a deeply personal experience and there are as many reasons to seek therapy as there are people who seek it. Perhaps you are struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, or shame. You may have suffered traumas or losses and are wondering how these shape your thoughts, feelings and relationships. Maybe you simply have a sense that aspects of your life are not coming together in the ways you desire. Therapy is a space to explore these curiosities, to develop insight into your self, and, ultimately, to find greater fulfillment in your work, relationships, and play.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
