The world needs helpers, just like you. But when life is stressful and overwhelming, where do you turn? You nurture others. You put your heart into your relationships and your work, but sometimes it starts to feel like it's too much. Like you're exhausted and unable to take some time for yourself.

I think of psychotherapy as a collaborative process and my style is interactive and engaged. I value people's strengths and maintain an open, empathic and non-judgmental position. Every individual and couple comes to therapy with unique needs, desires and history; so there is no one "right" way to work with everyone. Together the client and I determine what is most likely to be helpful. I have over 33 years experience treating all sorts of people, but I have a particular specialty in treating trauma and abuse survivors. I also see couples - those with and without trauma histories.

Being human is hard. We grow up often not taught how to feel, or be in healthy relationship with self and others. The isolation and loneliness make it even harder to process life's hardships. In turn, we develop ways of coping with stress and uncertainty, that become painful and limiting over time. Psychotherapy can be a space to unlearn these ways that are harming you, including systemic ones, dive deep into yourself, to meet all the parts of you, heal past traumas, personal, cultural and intergenerational.

Whether you're experiencing the same relationship conflicts over and over, are feeling ambivalent about having a child or need work on your parenting skills, or you're navigating anxiety, depression, infertility, separation, divorce, or co-parenting, I'm here for you. I know how powerful and transformative therapy can be, not just as a licensed marriage and family therapist, but as somebody who's also been a client. Like many of the people I work with, I've had to learn how to better understand myself, tune into my inner voice-to listen more deeply to my intuition, and to trust it. And I can help you do the same.

I have been doing individual and couple therapy for over thirty years. I use a variety of therapeutic approaches, always choosing the one that best suits the client's immediate needs. These modalities range from psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral to narrative and existential. There is even some dream and hypnotherapy added when helpful. In addition to my clinical practice, I have extensive forensic psychology experience, including resolving workplace disputes, custody issues, and trial consulting. My goal is to help clients find meaningful solutions to challenging life problems.

People with complex trauma are often at the mercy of their nervous systems. When something in the present reminds them of past traumatic experiences, their bodies and minds go immediately into self-protection mode. Whether that’s fighting, fleeing, freezing, submitting, or seeking attachment, it often feels like their reaction happens automatically and they’re not in control of it. In addition, because many people with childhood trauma were told when growing up that their feelings weren’t real, they may even feel protective of their reactivity; it’s as if having curiosity about the reaction somehow says their feelings aren’t valid.

I am a warm, caring, authentic and dynamic therapist. The foundation of my work is based on connection and the idea that when people are aware of their needs, wishes, and feelings they can make choices that bring them satisfaction and fulfillment. It is important to me that my clients feel comfortable expressing themselves and my hope is they will find my practice to be one in which they will be able to freely discuss their thoughts, feelings, and goals.

It is my belief that everyone navigates their way through their family of origin and early environment by developing strategies and coping techniques, essentially doing the best one can in the circumstances. Later, these ways of handling relationships and stressors can become limiting. Members of couples and families can also develop entrenched ways of relating that become partially based on assumptions. Frustration, anxiety, disappointment and resentment can result. Psychotherapy enables you to understand the evolution of these patterns and develop more choices in how you respond and relate to others.

I am looking clients who are interested in ongoing personal growth to help with their relationships, deepen their connections with others and find meaning in their lives. It could be through work, family, leisure, any venue. I am also quite skilled in helping those who have had trauma in their early lives, due to dysfunctional families, addiction, or abuse. I listen to what people want and I have 20 years of helping people find it. I work collaberatively, with compassion, tolerance without judgment and in a practical manner. Due to my life experience, work experience, and my own personal growth I am able to help you grow.

I have been in private practice as a psychotherapist in Berkeley since 1994, working with adults individually and with couples and groups, on recovering from relationship and betrayal trauma. This trauma may manifest as recurring intrusive reminders of overwhelming and unresolved past experiences and as emotional / somatic distress in your present life. Or it may result from inadequate nurture and protection in childhood (attachment trauma). Often, both contribute to the need and desire for relief and a better life beyond trauma. Individualized trauma therapy addresses the need for a new relationship with your past.

I provide depth-oriented psychotherapy for people from all walks of life who are struggling with a loss of meaning, confusion about one's place in the world and spiritual stagnation. This could manifest in hopelessness about one's career, a life crisis, various depressions and anxieties, loneliness and isolation, or feeling stuck in a relationship, too frozen to make a change.

Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated, or stuck? I can help you find ways to cope with uncomfortable feelings so that you can feel more balance in your daily life and more fulfilling relationships and experiences. Many of us rely on friends and family to help us work through problems, but sometimes our friends or family are part of the problem itself. Or maybe we just don't feel comfortable talking about certain issues with them. Oftentimes we withdraw from our support systems and end up feeling more and more alone.

I am a psychoanalytic relational therapist who believes that healing happens through a process of deep diving to address what’s underneath your symptoms and suffering.
Have you ever asked yourself these questions - Who am I? Who are my people? Do I belong? Why do I keep repeating the same patterns in relationships? Why do I have trouble standing up or speaking up for myself? Why can't I give to myself the way I give to others? Perhaps you seem fine on the outside, but struggle silently on the inside. I can help you explore these questions and find a deeper sense of connectedness to yourself and others. I can help you connect more with your body, emotions and experience, instead of living mostly in your head. I can help you feel more like a human being, instead of a “human doing."

My education and training has been primarily psychodynamic/ psychoanalytic, and my approach reflects the application of this evidence-base.
My work is informed by years of practice and research in evidence-based methods and interventions aimed at helping people change. I create strong collaborative relationships with a goal of helping to improve personal and interpersonal effectiveness, and to bringing about one's best, most authentic self. By working on problematic relationship patterns, changing patterns of thought and behavior, and by learning to become more flexible and integrated, my aim is to increase my patients' overall effectiveness and help them lead happier, more fulfilling lives. I expect changes made in therapy will lead to systemic improvements in my patients' lives.

I am an analytic candidate at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California.
Life can be difficult. Sometimes we feel stuck. It may be that recent events, difficult feelings or relationship challenges are making it clear that some things are not working. It could be that stress, worry or confusion have felt overwhelming and lead to unhelpful patterns with yourself and the others you care most about. Within the frameworks of relational psychodynamic and somatic psychotherapy I offer a warm, supportive presence so you can explore whats difficult, hone your strengths and become more fully yourself.
