Stress, burnout, and feeling overwhelmed by work or personal relationships. Are you struggling? Maybe you want to change, but don’t quite know what’s holding you back or how to do it. It may be a feeling in the pit of your stomach when you wake up, or getting worn down by the relentless self-criticism. Maybe you don't feel understood by others and feel judged or mistreated. I understand how hard and impossible it can all seem, but it’s not too late to start to feel better. Together we can take curious eye to your feelings and relationships. It is possible to break out of patterns holding you back.

I work best with clients who are looking for a safe and caring therapy relationship in order to pursue goals that have previously seemed too difficult to achieve alone. These goals typically range from wanting to experience life more fully, including a fuller range of emotions, to having more rewarding relationships and more fulfilling work lives. I have been practicing psychotherapy for 37 years, have been teaching it for almost as long, and feel comfortable assisting with a very wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, parenting challenges and other relationship and family conflicts.

I help individuals and couples explore the deeper layers of their inner life—body, mind, and soul. Many of the people I work with come in feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in painful patterns. Others are navigating transitions, grief, identity questions, or longing for more authentic connection. Some simply sense that life could feel more meaningful but don’t know where to begin. My approach is mindful and relational. Together, we slow down and pay close attention to the sensations, emotions, and beliefs that shape your life. This process can open new possibilities for clarity, healing, growth, and a renewed sense of presence.

Let's talk about your story. We are surrounded by stories about ourselves, our cultures, and communities. I help trans, queer, and POC people explore the stories that compose our lived experiences of anxiety, depression, gender, immigration, and race. Together, we'll work towards unpacking generational trauma to fortify your mental wellness, communication, boundaries, and intentional living. More about me: I am a queer, transmasculine, first-generation Vietnamese immigrant that has a green thumb and understands food to be a primary love language.

Many of the clients I work with have either lost or struggled to develop a sense of control in their lives and relationships– having fallen into destructive patterns of substance abuse/addiction and impulsive and/or self-harming behaviors. Others may be struggling with an excess of self-imposed control– leading to a sense of isolation and fear of taking healthy risks. Some are confronting a major life-transition, loss of identity, divorce, death of a loved one or faced with a pervading sense of meaninglessness. All are, in one way or another, seeking to increase their sense of personal agency and effectiveness in daily life.

In the spirit of mutual discovery, my Lacanian psychoanalytic approach is flexible and interactive, cultivating a safe and private space for you to fully speak your singular truth to thereby reorient your life. Through creating an atmosphere of especially empathic and respectful listening, I aim to help you hear your unconscious longings, and what is blocking their expression, so that you can freely speak and explore what you really want, and in the process, access hitherto untapped, unconscious resources for change.

Be honest – you’re tired of this cycle. You are single and scared you’ll fall for someone who can’t fully meet you – again. Or, you're in a relationship where you end up feeling so alone. You’ve done therapy, retreats, and deep inner work. You’ve read the books, meditated… maybe even explored plant medicine. Still, your inner voice whispers, “I’m too much. I have to be perfect to be loved.” You know where it comes from: childhood trauma. You’re accomplished and admired, yet in love you still ache from the anxiety and shame beneath the surface. You’re ready to break free and embrace the kind of relationship you truly desire.

If you want a therapist who has been around the block more than a few times, I'm your man. I became a Licenced MFT in 1986 and a Licensed Psychologist in 1993. For over 40 years I've been helping people slay their dragons, clarify their life directions, connect more deeply with themselves, their friends, and loved ones, and heal from the wounds life has a way of inflicting. And you know what? I still love it.

Life will present us now and then with the unexpected.  This clearly is a time of major change for all of us. Not all of this is new nor is it novel. Even in the most normal of times we often do experience unwelcome events, the loss of a loved one, disability, addiction, economic insecurity, loneliness. To live is perhaps also to suffer. But we need not suffer alone. You will find me to be a compassionate, capable psychotherapist. Working together, I can help you to live a happier, more contented and fulfilling life. So then, where are you now? Where would you like to go from here? Would you like to create a new narrative?

You may be coming to therapy because you are suffering from anxiety, depression, grief, fear or trauma from the past. Or you may be struggling with loneliness, relationship or career/ work issues. In order to work effectively on these and other issues, I believe it is fundamental to provide you with a safe space so that you can speak openly about yourself. My approach is to establish a therapeutic relationship based on trust and respect in order to promote change and healing. This is not always easy work, but when we feel heard, understood and open to the caring and empathy of another, the experience can be life changing.

The deep questions we struggle with include; what's not working in my relationships, work life, or myself? How does a person change so that they can get unstuck and pursue what is meaningful? These are the questions we'd explore and answer together. By appreciating both conscious ideas and the pull of unconscious and historical forces, we would focus on what can be understood, what can be altered, and what must be accepted.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
