I specialize in both
adolescent
and adult psychotherapy and treat mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and complex trauma (PTSD).
My therapy style is down to earth, warm, inviting and active. I believe therapy is most effective when it is a collaborative process between the client and the therapist. We will work together to explore, reflect and identify areas in which insight and change are needed to achieve your goals. In sessions, I openly share my thoughts and my perspective as a guiding force but respect and believe that you are the leader in the room. I provide therapy as a transformative experience or a space to just let go, it can be whatever you need it to be, as long as the purpose of this space is for you to heal and find more joy in your life.

I'm also a family therapist with the SAYFE program at Edgewood Center for Children and Families and was previously a clinician/consultant with UCSF HEARTS (Healthy Environments and Response to Trauma in Schools) in the Division of Infant, Child, and
Adolescent
Psychiatry at UCSF.
My practice is dedicated to the emotional and relational wellbeing of youth (preteens, teens, young adults) and families. With this in mind, I aim to create a safe space for shared reflection, build on existing strengths, and offer new tools to promote self-understanding, growth, and social and emotional resilience. My interventions and style are tailored to individual needs, but building a genuine, trusting, and supportive relationship is at the foundation of my work. Sessions may include a combination of talk, play, art, and movement, as well as other activities that create a safe space and facilitate the therapeutic process.

If you think I'm the right person for you (or your relationship, or your
teen
), I'd love to hear from you and schedule an introductory consultation.
Sometimes amazing things can grow under pressure. Living with stigma - related to a mind that works differently, a body that's unruly or "too much," or a sexuality that doesn't fit behind a white picket fence - asks us to be creative and fierce. The wisdom that can grow here is astounding. But the burden of stigma is heavy, and sometimes it grips us in painful positions. Whether you're feeling exhausted, sick of yourself, or just don't know quite how to relate to other people, therapy with me can help.

Whether you’re a
teen
in high school or college or a young adult launching into working life, I create a safe, therapeutic environment to explore, experiment, and create.
Figuring out who you want to be and how you want to live is a huge undertaking. It’s even harder to do while depressed, anxious, recovering from trauma, or grappling with your mental health. Add in a continuing, ever-changing global pandemic, climate change, systemic and interpersonal racism, threats to reproductive rights and LGBTQI rights as well as to our democracy, and an uncertain economic future? What’s there to feel good about? I hold out hope that you can create something beautiful and satisfying out of your experiences, even in the face of a traumatic past and uncertain future.

In addition to my specialized work with men and boys, my practice welcomes adult women, and
adolescent
girls, as well as couples and families.
As an experienced Licensed MFT, I offer a full range of psychotherapy services for men, women, adolescents, couples, and families. I founded The Men's Center for Counseling and Psychotherapy in 1984 in order to focus upon the psychological and emotional lives of men and boys. I particularly enjoy helping folks struggling with cross-cultural issues. My practice also includes work with women, girls, and couples of all persuasions. As an interactive therapist, I join my clients as they explore complex, often contradictory, intrapsychic forces. I bring humor, warmth, empathy, common-sense, and a genuine curiosity to the therapeutic encounter.

In working therapeutically with teens, I focus on providing a warm environment to build trust in the therapist-client relationship, for your
teen
to feel safe to talk about the things that are troubling them and impacting their mood, behaviors and relationships.
Through therapy with your child, I will work in building resiliency, learning new coping skills, emotional regulation, and providing a safe space to process memories and current life experiences and traumas. Unlike adults who tend more to communicate verbally or from a logical perspective, children use creativity and imaginative play to express their inner thoughts and feelings, it is often the main way children relate and learn about themselves and their world. Through play therapy, I respond to your child with care, attunement, and skillfulness in helping them understand difficult emotions and make sense of confusing experiences.

These include depression, anxiety, chronic suicidal ideation, self-harming behaviors, PTSD, family strain, and self-esteem issues. My work with adults has centered around many of the issues mentioned above, as well as life transitions, marital conflict, loss, and parenting.

Therapy with a child or
teen
specialist can help.
You're here because you or your child is struggling. Maybe it's the tantrums, defiance, aggression, or even anxiety in your little one that has you worried. Or maybe your
teenager
is showing signs of depression, withdrawal, or delinquency. You might be feeling confused, powerless, and overwhelmed when you try to make things right with your kid. You would do anything for your child, but you're not sure how to best help them right now. You're ready for help.

I believe the key to effective assessment is the collaboration between the psychologist, parents, and the child or
adolescent
.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in psychological testing with children and adolescents. I have been practicing in this area for over a decade and have trained with experts in child assessment. My evaluations assess the presence of attention challenges, learning struggles, and emotional difficulties. I conduct thorough, comprehensive assessments informed by the Therapeutic/Collaborative Assessment model. In this model, parents and children are team members in the process and we work together to answer the referral questions. At the completion of the process, adolescents receive a feedback letter explaining the testing findings in accessible language and children receive an individualized picture book.

It’s so hard to watch your child struggle with feeling different, lonely, and left out. And for parents it can be emotionally painful and confusing. You feel frustrated and helpless and don’t know how to help your child. Maybe your child feels left out socially, or part of their identity is different from their peers’. Maybe you have an
adolescent
who feels anxious and overwhelmed by social changes and physical changes in their body. Or your child’s mental health struggles leave them feeling alienated. Whatever the cause, you want your child to feel they belong, and your child wants to feel seen, heard, and connected to others.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
