With 15+ years of experience working as a School Psychologist (NCSP) and Special Education/Student Services Director, I know the complexities of determining if/what specialized educational support is needed. Over the years I've worked with students in public, charter and private schools. I've also taught assessment to school psych graduate students at CSUS. I've provided staff and parent trainings on topics of 2nd language acquisition, specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, and mental health issues such as anxiety. As an educational psychologist, I work with learners pre-k to college to support their educational journey.

I am passionate about helping through assessment. Assessments are designed to understand learning profiles, as well as to differentiate between issues (such as anxiety and inattention) and document eligibility to accommodations on standardized testing and in school. I can help with full assessments for attention, learning differences, autism, and psychological concerns. Boutique and a-la-carte testing is also available and often indicated for giftedness or as a screening to determine whether further assessment is needed. I have over 20 years of experience and can apply that expertise to devising a battery tailored to your needs.

As a child, adult, and couple's psychologist, my goal is to provide treatment with care and integrity. Children come in for school problems, behavioral problems or mood disturbances including anxiety. I provide support and coaching for parents along side the therapy for their children. Adults come to see me for desire to live with less pain, more peace. Couples engage in work to improve communication or manage a stress that is effecting the relationship. The therapeutic relationship is a powerful medium for change. Regardless of the reason for starting therapy, most people get tremendous relief.

If you're struggling with issues related to anxiety, depression, or coping with life stressors, therapy can be beneficial in helping you uncover underlying, engrained beliefs that can end up fueling mental health symptoms. My clinical approach to therapy is a culturally aware, client-centered understanding of psychosocial issues that may have contributed to developing mental health symptoms and uncovering personal insight to thought and behavioral patterns that likely exacerbated those symptoms. Seeking therapy can be intimidating or overwhelming, but please feel free to reach out so we can discuss if we would be a helpful fit.

In every phase of life, we are presented with new challenges: stress, issues at work, challenging relationships, feeling stuck, depression, difficulties with your kids, difficulties with your parents, pain, loss, anxiety, fear. It is not always easy to manage these challenges when they come our way, and sometimes we just need some support in processing it all, and figuring out what to do next. Everyone needs support, therapy is for everyone. In my practice, I want to get to know you, understand your challenges, understand your needs, and understand your goals. Together we can work toward overcoming the challenges you are facing.

When our children's hearts have been broken, our hearts break, too. Parents often struggle with knowing how to care for a hurting child. The child's behaviors can be challenging. A parent's own unhealed wounds get triggered. Then, there's the parenting guilt! It can be overwhelming. We understand and we are here to help.

Education and Learning Disabilities Therapists

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
