Successful therapy is a combination of your life experiences coupled with my skill set in a caring, supportive environment. When you put those things together your life will begin to change in ways you have secretly hoped were possible. I often am asked how looking at past experiences and feelings can enhance our future. Basically, "why waste time looking backwards?" My answer is this: When we don't take time to reflect on unconscious patterns we often repeat them; even ones that don't serve us. It's time to break that chain.

I view many of the challenges we face as human beings rooted in the very common human struggle of ambivalence. We would prefer to avoid unpleasant experiences, negative thoughts and feelings, and perhaps have not yet made our own case for change. I approach the many psychological issues listed under specialties from the perspective of helping people to enhance their motivation to change, as well as bringing mindfulness to one's every day experiences, whether they be pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. Whether you may struggle with depression, anxiety, ambivalence, substance use, or other issues, the approaches I offer can help.

I take an embodied approach to healing–whether that is by working somatically with the felt sense in the body or through the use of expressive arts. I am here to provide a trauma-sensitive container that allows you to investigate and integrate the inner workings of your mind, heart, body, and spirit. My approach is warm, collaborative, and dynamic. I believe in your innate wisdom to discover your own path to healing, and feel honored to join in that discovery. I am here to witness, affirm, and celebrate your unique story, while acknowledging the ways different systems have impacted your lived experiences.

Hi! I’m really looking forward to meeting and welcoming you to a safe, accepting space where you can share. Being a human is hard! And parenting humans is tough too! When we're triggered all over the place and when we're scared, it's hard to be in an authentic relationship with others. But when we take care of ourselves, when we really understand ourselves, then we can show up in our relationships in ways that lead to more connection, which is what we all want.

You’ve made it out of the pandemic and are ready to get your life back! Perhaps you were at home with family or isolated in an apartment? The pause gave you space to think and to evaluate what you actually want your life to look like: more time with loved ones, more time for self-care, less time on your phones?

I am passionate about helping through assessment. Assessments are designed to understand learning profiles, as well as to differentiate between issues (such as anxiety and inattention) and document eligibility to accommodations on standardized testing and in school. I can help with full assessments for attention, learning differences, autism, and psychological concerns. Boutique and a-la-carte testing is also available and often indicated for giftedness or as a screening to determine whether further assessment is needed. I have over 20 years of experience and can apply that expertise to devising a battery tailored to your needs.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
