My specialties include trauma, depression, identity, and caregiver stress.
We all arrive to therapy with unique needs, hurts, and wishes. We may not even know what we are seeking, just that life is not feeling good. My goal as a therapist is to be a partner in the journey – we may not know the path, or even the destination. Therapy can help reveal forks in the road, grieve parts of the trail, or even give us the courage to trek on. We can process trauma and define what it means to heal. We can develop a greater sense of self and a deeper connection with others. My ideal client is someone who wants to learn about themselves, but maybe feels unsure of where to start.

When we have an experience that is traumatic or incredibly stressful, our brains have a hard time processing that memory. This can create symptoms such as, anxiety, depression, overwhelming emotions, difficult feelings, self-blame, or relationship problems, to name a few. If given the opportunity, our minds, like our bodies, have the innate ability to heal. The trouble with difficult experiences, however, is that these memories get tangled, leaving us feeling stuck or showing up in other destructive ways in our lives.

I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor who takes a holistic approach to mental health treatment. I find that our experiences impact different parts of our life (i.e., social, mental, physical, spiritual, sexual, etc.), and attention needs to be paid to each area. The first thing we work on, no matter what the problem, is establishing a trusting relationship where you feel comfortable and safe.

I work with patients who survived physical, sexual, or spiritual abuse or trauma.
Being hurt is a part of life. None of us are free of pain. Sometimes, the troubles of life, the losses you have experienced, the pain and hurt other people have caused, your fears about the future, and your regrets about your past create a life of torment. By taking responsibility for your life, accepting, and allowing what happens to you rather than resisting the pain, you can move forward with your life. You are worthy to live your life with joy, love, clarity, and dignity. Let me be your friend and fellow traveler on your journey. You can find more information about me on my webpage: miriammunzarova.com

I focus on working with clients to heal childhood trauma so they can live more emotionally and relationally enriched lives.
As a child, were you expected to "be seen but not heard"? Were you ever told to "stop crying before I give you something to cry about"? Maybe you learned quickly to sacrifice authentic emotions in order to feel accepted. While that may have helped get your needs met in childhood, it no longer serves you in adulthood. Now you find that suppressing your emotions interferes with your ability to connect deeply with others. You frequently avoid intimacy and vulnerability. Maybe you have thought “I’m broken” or “I’ll never be enough.” I’m here to help you discover that you aren’t broken and you are, and always have been, enough.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years experience working with adults, children, adolescents, families and couples of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities who have experienced family dysfunction, trauma, abuse, sudden loss, and crime victimization.
Everyone deserves support in a crisis. For some, it may have been an event that occurred years ago, and for others it is more recent. Seeking professional help and support is often times the first step to coping with a difficult life period or transition. I believe that healing and empowerment are wholly achievable and begin with a trusting and accepting therapist-client relationship in a safe therapeutic environment.

I work with adults and couples to understand the despair of anxiety, depersonalization, and isolation - the insight into trauma, abuse, and abandonment we develop is often the reason that clients work with me for longer periods of time.
Although most people are depressed or angry at times, they generally find a way to deal with the situation. There are times, however, when a person loses hope or is overwhelmed. They or others decide they might use some help. Sometimes a woman or a man decides that they would like to adjust their life style and emphasize their sense of self. If you work in Silicon Valley, I can use my experience in industry to help you unblock your potential and design effective strategies for greater satisfaction. If you seek spiritual depth, my years as a guide may help unfold meaning.

I specialize in the healing of complex relational trauma, and take a holistic approach in interweaving insights from throughout the field - humanistic, psychodynamic, somatic, existential, ACT, DBT, Buddhism, IFS, NVC etc.
Our experiences and lives are each unique, filled with a rich depth of nuance and meaning. I believe one of the profound ways therapy heals is in offering space for something vitally nutritive yet rare: presence that is both committed and neutral. This both intimate and non-reactive/nonjudgmental "being with” of contact with another, and with ourselves, of simply touching and holding our experiences, I believe communicates value and holds deep power for transformation. While trauma encodes in our nervous systems, beliefs and self-talk, neuroplasticity means that our brains can change with new experiences- internal and interpersonal.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
