Often heard in my session room: "I want to find my voice and be able to express it. I want to be authentic" Clients needing deep listening who embrace a readiness to explore and put aside with help, their own internal wounds and defenses to enable the hearing of their small strong voice within. The voice may have been quieted through neglect, abuse, trauma, addiction or other mental illness in the family .

Have you outgrown some aspect of your current life and either longing for change, or had change hit you over the head? When you come to a crossroads, there is an invitation to step into a new stage of development which is uncertain, unfamiliar and feels risky. You may have a hard time trusting yourself to make the "right" decisions, and feelings of anxiety, grief, sadness and self-doubt may remind you of painful, early life experiences you've tried to forget. Although challenging, life transitions present a huge opportunity for healing and growth by waking us up out of our trance, and begging us to explore what matters most.

We are a group practice providing psychotherapy, counseling, training, mediation, coaching, consultation, and other services. While we provide psychotherapy in general, we also specialize in working with those involved in legal issues. For example, we not only provide individual and couples counseling to deal with such issues as anger management, domestic violence, drug or alcohol abuse, but also help to mediate the relationship issues, prepare clients for court, and to be a general resource for both attorney and client. We provide services throughout Santa Barbara and San Luis Counties.

Would you like to communicate without conflict, hearing each other and easily resolving differences? Do you repeat the same fights or create distance rather than enjoy each other? Do you miss the connection you had at the start of your relationship? Bobby and I are a couple who struggled with these issues ourselves. With over 50 years’ combined experience, we found solutions and created powerful tools and skill-sets for success. We find that differences dissolve with deep connection, and would love to support your emotional, relational, creative and spiritual well-being. We both care deeply and are highly creative.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
