I work with individuals, couples and families struggling with substance and alcohol use, as well as behavioral addictions such as porn, gambling, gaming etc.
Feeling overwhelmed by addiction and looking for a way forward? Seeking an alternative to rehab or unable to take leave from family, work and responsibilities? Overcoming addiction is hard, likely one of the hardest things you will go through, and you don't have to do it alone! I have served countless people, just like you, in finding a new path that doesn't depend on substances or behaviors that promise relief, but often bring guilt, regrets, dysfunctional moods, and damage the relationships of those we love the most. Freedom from addiction can be hard to imagine, I know firsthand. Seeking professional support is a great step!

The first step is to reach out to me and we’ll set up a free consultation either on zoom to discuss more and learn a bit more about each other and see if we’re a good fit to work together.

Sean is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who works with adults and couples navigating anxiety, relationship strain, life transitions, and periods of emotional or existential crisis. Many of his clients are thoughtful, capable, high-functioning people who appear steady on the outside, yet feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or caught in painful relational patterns beneath the surface. Life is about maintaining balance in all aspects, through love. There is so much out there to learn and grow from, so why not have fun doing it? A little about me: I love going to CrossFit every morning. I am a huge nerd, constantly listening to audibles and/or podcasts such as Huberman Lab and non-fiction books. I enjoy being outdoors: snowboarding, motorcycle/dirt biking, hiking, any movement &traveling. My parents are from Peru, so I visit there often. Tambien hablo español! Therapy can help your understanding of where your emotions come from connecting the past to the present, and decreasing the intensity by making sense of it.

I look forward to working with clients who are ready to engage in the process; however, that does not mean they have to know exactly how or where to start. I see my job as working myself out of a job by providing feedback and tools for clients to take forth into their lives. The time this takes may vary depending on each client’s goals. I help clients experiencing difficulties in areas including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, alcohol or drug use, changes in life circumstances, and those wanting to explore personal growth.

Imagine it’s 3 AM, and you’re lying awake, haunted by an aching emptiness. Your heart pounds, lodged somewhere between your chest and your throat, as you long for someone to offer guidance on your broken heart. The absence of your loved one overwhelms you, filling every room you walk through with a sense of loss and sadness. The pain is consuming, and concentrating on anything feels impossible. Well-meaning friends say things like, “Just give it time,” or “Stay busy, you’ll get past this,” yet their words feel hollow.

You look like you have it all together, but inside you’re battling anxiety, self-criticism, and the fear of not being enough. The pressure to perform perfectly in your work, relationships, and life is exhausting. You lie awake replaying conversations, second-guessing decisions, and wondering why you can’t just “get over it.” Even when things seem fine from the outside, there’s a constant hum of worry, self-doubt, or the weight of past trauma that keeps you feeling stuck, disconnected, and running on empty. I offer in-person therapy in San Diego, CA, and online therapy across California, Indiana, and Ohio.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
