Life and relationships are filled with amazing experiences and opportunities. However, life and relationships also come with challenges and struggles. When we are hurt by those we love or by the circumstances of life we want someone safe to turn for help and support. Our hope is for the pain to be less and ideally for broken relationships to be healed. We long for healthy relationships and skills to navigate life like when the waters are rough.

I've been blessed with the opportunity to help people navigate through difficult times. I drank from a fire hose in educational and professional settings so that I could be as helpful as possible to as many as possible but the one lesson I learned over and over again is that meeting others where they are at puts you in the best position to help them with what they're going through and to build skills to do it on their own.

My name is Joseph Manning. I’m an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist as well as an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor. I earned my MA in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles. After being what I now call an “industrial strength best friend” for many years, and after being told countless times that I should be a therapist, I finally took that advice to heart. I bring a feeling of safety into the therapy room, which allows clients to discuss anything that troubles them without fear of judgment or comparison. I’ve worked successfully with clients from first grade into post-retirement. I welcome individuals

Our developing years can often be filled with confusion, fear, and other big emotions. Whether I’m working with children or the inner child, speaking with someone who can present a different vantage point and offer tools of healing from a non-judgmental and supportive place can be what we need to achieve wholeness. From coping and managing stressors, self-esteem and confidence building, social and relationship concerns, or self-discovery, I'm dedicated to supporting the growth and development of children, teens and young adults.

First: F ICE! Second: Dads! Let's get real, parenting is hard. And if you're feeling anxious, depressed, disconnected, overwhelmed...you're not alone, but it can feel that way. You're probably consumed by all of your tasks and goals; advancing your career, securing a stable income, and staying connected with your partner and loved ones, all while battling exhaustion and burnout. Perhaps you have unresolved past experiences weighing on you, too. And on the surface, you want practical relationship, parenting, and self-care tools. What you may truly need though is to feel connected to others and your self. I want to support you.

Hi, I am Dr. James Fishback, a licensed Clinical Psychologist. I have been working with adults and children in private practice, schools, prisons, outdoor settings, and courts for 33 years. My therapy approach is first to deal with any immediate stress to help set up support for my clients and then work on the cause and resolution of their problems and issues at a pace they select. I think my strengths as a therapist are working with individuals and couples who are ready to work on understanding and acknowledging how each of them contributes to their own issues and to the resolution of them.

***CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS*** With a history of working with men from all walks of life, including athletes, first responders, and students, it is clear to me that many of us are taught to separate our hearts and our heads in order to navigate our lived experience. We learn that emotions are not to be trusted, indeed that they are to be suspended if we are to make intelligent decisions. Along with this mistrust of emotion I often encounter the harmful effects of fatherlessness or abusive/neglectful father figures, which damages our understanding of masculinity and how that masculinity expresses itself in daily life.

Life can feel overwhelming sometimes, and asking for help takes courage. My role is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can share your story, explore what’s holding you back, and work toward the life you want. I’ve had the privilege of working with people from many different backgrounds—teens transitioning into adults, adults navigating stress or relationship struggles, and individuals coping with trauma, anxiety, depression, or serious mental health challenges. What I’ve learned is that every person’s journey is unique, and therapy should reflect that. I also have an extensive background in psychological assessments.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
