Surviving a painful family trauma myself has allowed me personal insight into the healing journey.
“We will all struggle and fall; we will know what it means to be both brave and brokenhearted.” – Brene Brown You are taking the courageous step toward healing and I would love to accompany you in that journey whether you are an individual, couple, or family . While I have the education and 35 years of experience as a licensed therapist, I truly believe that everyone is their own expert and change and progress cannot happen without your insight. I find that, using your experience, and my training, we can find a highly effective vehicle for change.

My approach combines cognitive-behavioral, person-centered, solution focused, motivational interviewing, and family systems therapy.
I have experience and enjoy working with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, life transitions, and trauma. I have also helped parents whose children are at risk of entering a higher level of care, parents who have recently reunited with their children after foster care, parents who have adopted, or parents who are struggling due to their own experience of trauma in their childhood. Everyone needs something different out of therapy but at the very least, it is my job to provide a therapeutic relationship focused on listening and connection.

There comes a time when we need help. I appreciate the courage anyone demonstrates when they make that call. I hope to create a space where individuals and families can receive that trusted assistance. I have been a therapist for thirty years. I was a tennis pro for ten years before that. I am aware of the process of change. There is a timing when an individual, or family , is ready to make those adjustments. In working with children, I involve the whole family . I especially enjoy the travels that the adolescent makes, and the perplexing attempts parents make in adjusting to this challenging phase. I work with addictions.

I have an integrative healing approach, but most of the time end up using playful family approaches with children and teens and using EMDR with women.
Big sigh...what a year. I believe that, in one way or another, we are all striving to be our best and most authentic selves. In a time like this, where the highs are high and the lows are low, managing the shifts can be really overwhelming. Pain gets in the way. Grief gets in the way. We hit road blocks that we feel are too big to pass. You have tried changing others. You have tried avoiding. You have tried all the self help ideas. You feel like you have lost control. And now you are in this spot in your life, where you are asking a lot of questions and wondering if there is something more.

Stressed? Burned out? Anxious? Depressed? Overwhelmed by the world? Difficulty communicating? Feeling disconnected from your partner or yourself? The world is a crazy messy place sometimes (especially lately). Our past and current circumstances often create a difficult place to be in our thoughts and our feelings and we often can feel “stuck” in our current circumstances. Some of us carry really heavy burdens and keep on a brave face for those around us because for a lot of reasons like our jobs, roles at home, family , friends, keeping up with the Joneses, you name it!

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
