In addition, I specialize in working with people who are living with serious illness or living in the midst of grief .
As a therapist I have witnessed healing and its splendor in the darkest of circumstances and am honored when individuals choose to embark on this journey with me. I know the decision to enter therapy is not always easy. Therapy is not easy. But therapy heals. When you enter therapy you put forth a willingness to acknowledge painful emotions and circumstances and a readiness to explore life events that are often uncomfortable, sometimes even paralyzing. But the insight and meaning you will gain from therapy will lead to transformation, comfort and growth.

In addition, I have particular expertise in issues around suicide loss and the subsequent bereavement process, and have also worked with individuals who are dealing with serious illness or end-of-life issues.
Are you looking for a therapist who is smart, compassionate and can help you navigate through the often painful aspects of relationship conflicts, grief , illness or challenging life transitions? Do you need help in sorting out and understanding the ways in which you get "stuck" in old patterns? My aim is to help you better understand (and have more control over) those issues which may be negatively impacting your quality of life. Such self-understanding can lead to expanded abilities to cope with all sorts of stress, overcome fear and can also improve self-esteem.

Hi, I'm Helen - a Filipina Asian American therapist. First, I want to acknowledge your decision to start therapy. This decision might come from the realization that "something isn't right". You might be scared, lost, and dealing with a lot of anxiety, sadness, and grief . You may even be struggling secretly. But, you don't have to struggle through this alone. l believe therapy is a brave space to reclaim your identity and begin learning the skills necessary to create a meaningful life. We can work together to help unlearn patterns that don't serve you, to make space for healthy communication and peace.

Are you flat-out stuck? Then it's time to be more decisive and take action. Feeling lost? Then it's time to make goals and create a plan to attain them. Are you in flux? Divorce, career changes and loss are changes not endings. If you're getting in your own way, it's time to put an end to self-destructive habits. How does unwavering support and relentless compassion sound? Maybe you've invested time looking at your past to analyze the original source of your present day challenges. And maybe now you feel ready to say, "The past is the past and it's time to let go of my history and move forward with courage, energy and excitement!"

Life has a way to take us to somewhere unexpected and requires us to make some changes to find a new balance. It could be something exciting, such as starting college, starting a family, getting promoted at work, etc. It could also be something sad, like ending a relationship, loss of a loved one, or being apart from family. In any case, adjusting to a change in life is stressful and can cause anxiety and/or depression. At a time like this, I can provide you with effective coping skills to make transitions easier.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
