As humans, we are frequently challenged with the need to adjust-- to unforeseen changes and transitions, to loss, to injury and illness, or to the pressures of everyday life. And sometimes adjustment is needed in relation to an event or process of our own choosing (divorce, elective surgery, spiritual quest). For individuals who wish to deepen their understanding of themselves and their circumstances, or for those struggling with specific challenges, my commitment is to come alongside and help you cope, gain insight, problem-solve, heal, and adjust such that life can be lived as fully and genuinely as possible.

Hi, I'm Helen - a Filipina Asian American therapist. First, I want to acknowledge your decision to start therapy. This decision might come from the realization that "something isn't right". You might be scared, lost, and dealing with a lot of anxiety, sadness, and grief. You may even be struggling secretly. But, you don't have to struggle through this alone. l believe therapy is a brave space to reclaim your identity and begin learning the skills necessary to create a meaningful life. We can work together to help unlearn patterns that don't serve you, to make space for healthy communication and peace.

There are times in our relationships with our children that we love them, but we may not “like” them. My approach to both therapy and assessment is rooted in the belief that what is “right” about your child is stronger than what is “wrong”. By uncovering both your child’s strengths and vulnerabilities, a comprehensive treatment plan can be developed in collaboration with you and your child. My approach draws from the fields of Neuropsychology, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness and Positive Psychology.

I work with the human psyche! WHETHER LIFE IS ON FIRE OR WHEN PAIN IS TOO STRONG TO BEAR OR IF YOU LOOK FOR PERSONAL DISCOVERY. My ideal client comes in in order to learn about how to tune with his or her psyche. Clients, in depth work, learn about the inner and outer relationships and how to connect with the things that lies underneath. I see clients who are looking for discovery of what exists beyond the behavior and their actions and who are willing to dive into learning about the forces that drive them.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
