Every person has many sides to their personality. Often these different sides are in conflict with one another and cause pain, anxiety and/or depression. When we find ourselves caught in repeated conflict in relationships, or we behave in ways that feel uncharacteristic, we often are in conflict with an aspect of ourself that is unknown or unconscious to us.The goal of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy is to help the unconscious self become conscious. When we begin to know ourselves better we can often make better choices and develop better tools to deal with the conflicts and stress that life brings us.

I am a highly trained and experienced psychotherapist. For over 25 years, I have worked with individuals and couples who are suffering from a wide range of problems including depression, anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, trauma, communication breakdowns, parenting concerns, and relationship and work stress. Choosing a therapist and beginning psychotherapy can be a challenging process. It is important to feel safe with the person you work with in order to talk about your emotions and what is on your mind openly and fully. As your therapist, I will work with you in a warm, attentive and empathetic way.

While it can be intimidating to think about beginning therapy, it’s my hope that my warm and collaborative style of engaging with you will offer some ease in initiating our work together. Having dedicated space for understanding and learning about you by speaking can feel relieving, and starts with a good amount of courage in your initial reaching out. In our work together, I will carefully listen to you while building a collaborative relationship based in warm curiosity, offering you my thoughts and connections related to the barriers that may be holding you back from moving towards your known and yet-to-be-known goals.

Would you like to know yourself better and more deeply? To be able to move beyond painful or frustrating patterns in your feelings, relationships, and work? Sometimes it's clear why we feel and act how we do: ecstatic about a new romance, upset about a professional disappointment, awash with grief following the loss of a loved one. Other times your feelings and behaviors may surprise you—a nagging anxiety, a lingering sadness, memories of past experiences that you thought you'd left behind, a sense that your relationship with a partner could be deeper, or that work could be more fulfilling even as you have success along the way.

I offer psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adults and couples seeking deeper understanding and lasting change.
You may appear to function well on the outside and still feel disconnected, overwhelmed, lonely, or uncertain about who you are. Perhaps you find yourself repeating painful relationship patterns, struggling with depression or anxiety, feeling emotionally stuck, or sensing that something important in your life no longer fits. Life transitions—changes in relationships, family roles, work, loss, immigration, or shifts in identity—can bring challenges that are difficult to understand alone.

You may long to live wholeheartedly - and to feel loved and connected - but struggle with anger, depression, loneliness, or inexplicable sadness and anxiety. You may find the stress of work, life, running a household, or parenting has diminished your capacity to feel joy and be creative. Once a source of comfort and pleasure, your intimate relationship may now be disappointing, frustrating, or even deadening. Therapy can help relieve the symptoms of debilitating feelings by uncovering the underlying (and sometimes unconscious) causes, and empower individuals - and couples - to become the authors of the lives they want to live.

I have always found the more relational and emotionally based this work is then the more rewarding and successful it is for clients and myself. I work with a wide range of clients. Their basic desire is to connect with themselves and others. Of late, it seems, many of my clients are couples; men ; adolescents; and mid-life and elderly of both sexes. Each are addressing important problems and/or transitional stages of life. Our work can be fearful and/or fearless, exciting and/or slow and always the challenge of facing not-knowing, making choices and exploring ourselves.

I lived in New York City for many years as a performing artist and body worker. My background as an actor and performer gives me a certain knack for working with those who have a creative bent. I have personal experience with the longings that come with artistic striving, but the reality is that my clients have a wide variety of careers, interests, and life stressors. I work with depression, anxiety, complex trauma, PTSD and more.

Although I integrate several different theoretical styles, I primarily using a Jungian, relational, and psychodynamic/ psychoanalytic approach.
Some form of suffering brings people to therapy. I create a safe, disarming environment to approach difficult issues in collaboration. I like working with clients who want to deepen insight & self-awareness, refine perspectives & frame of mind, and improve relationship skills. Relationships are powerful - both the cause of much suffering and a necessary ingredient for growth and joy. Wounds from past relationships require new corrective relational experiences to be healed, making therapy essential and helpful. Clients report feeling safe and connected when we meet and notice changes in their lives over time.

You may be experiencing acute emotional pain due to an unexpected change in your life, or you may feel that the suffering has been there for a long time and coping on your own is no longer enough. You may find yourself feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or lonely, repeating the same patterns without being able to find your way out. You may be wishing for deeper relationships, a more satisfying and creative job, or relief from inner turmoil. If you continue to feel insecure, anxious, or depressed, no matter what you try, therapy can help.

It's hard to go it alone with painful feelings of confusion, guilt, sadness, anxiety, despair. Therapy helps to unravel internal knots related to relationship conflict, work dissatisfaction, and just getting through the day. These issues may be connected to a history of family dysfunction, divorce, addiction, mental illness, abuse, unresolved conflict or estrangement from loved ones. I can help with that.

Perhaps you have felt you do not fit in somehow in your family, your community, or the larger world. Perhaps you have been navigating multiple cultural identities inside. Perhaps you have felt like your spirit is tender and the struggles of your life are too much to bare. Perhaps you have felt that other people have figured it out and you have been comparing your insides to other people's outsides. And you have felt alone, maybe scared, and confused. And now you want someone to help you be with it all. Now you want a compassionate heart and a steady presence to navigate these emotional terrains.

Psychoanalytic Therapists
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
