My approach to therapy emphasizes self knowledge, empowerment and insight helping move towards a more integral, meaningful and gratifying
life
. It is with passion and kindness that I witness the healing transformation a person goes through in the therapeutic relationship. Originally from Brazil, I speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese working with clients who speak these languages. Three theories permeate my work: the Integral theory of Ken Wilber, Psychodynamic theory, and Hakomi. I integrate into the analysis the physical, mental, emotional, and social parts of the self (Integral) in a mindfulness-based, body inclusive, and experiential perspective (Hakomi).

In addition to a psychotherapy model, I also help individuals & relationships connect with their deepest sense of purpose & passion using the Co-Active model of
coaching
& leadership development.
I work with adult individuals and couples from the Attachment Theory and evidence-based modalities of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) and the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. Couples can develop patterns of interacting that lead to frustrating arguments, immovable conflict and painful disconnection from each other. I help couples calm the fighting, move from stuck places, and shift those negative patterns into secure and loving connection. With couples, I work primarily from the evidence-based model of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT)

Important areas of my practice include anxiety, depression and overwhelming emotional states that interfere with and limit the satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from relationships and work. I also treat symptoms related to phase of
life
problems such as career changes, parenthood, mid-
life
, separation and divorce. A strong interest of mine is how to develop and maintain healthy relationships. I am an ex-lawyer, having worked as a litigator, and my style is interactive and collaborative. My office is near the campus of the University of California in Berkeley.

We are all born whole, in lovingkind perfection. But
life
produces obstacles that sidetrack our becoming ourselves. Obstacles take any forms: trauma in the body, inauthentic identities, existential fears, beliefs indoctrinated but in conflict with one's essential values, or anxiety that something is wrong with oneself. The result can be alienation, grief, substance use issues, depression, anxiety, difficulty connecting, or incapacity to speak or create from the heart. Reconnecting with ones body, the natural world, and with an unconditional community are the foundations re-emerging into the Self you've always been.

After many years as a psychologist I know one thing for certain: the foundation of therapy is a relationship built on trust, openness, and mutual respect. I see myself as a guide and partner in the change process. I have experience treating the full range of adult problems and have always worked with a culturally diverse population. I have particular interest in creativity, women's issues, and adult development throughout the
life
cycle. I have specialized training in addictions, codependence, and eating disorders. My therapeutic orientation is broadly psychodynamic, along with EMDR and mindfulness-based approaches.

I am a psychotherapist in private practice in the East Bay since 1996. I offer a non-judgmental therapeutic relationship where individuals, couples or families can find self acceptance, safety, access insight and intuition, and cultivate an attitude of kindness toward the self and others. Recovery from trauma, working on communication and relationships, overcoming addiction, spiritual self-development and healing, and coping with depression/stress from major
life
transitions are common themes. I have taught and supervised therapists in training at various local agencies. I also have a background in holistic and shamanic healing.

My special interest is working with people who feel distress with
life
transitions and family related issues.
Do you feel stuck or misunderstood and often have strong reactions towards others and can't seem to figure out if it's you or others? Often times our cultural identity and values intertwine into our current relationships creating tensions, stress and challenges. Our differences in communication styles, thinking patterns and ways of expressing our feelings maybe the reasons we are experiencing stress in our lives and our relationships. Psychotherapy can provide the opportunity for us to explore the distress and difficulties in your relationships in a safe space and deepen your self reflection of unconscious behaviors and patterns.

Through my personal exploration & professional training, I delight in the work of helping you to individuate, allowing you to enrich your connection to Self, deepen relationships, and take ownership of the stories that run your
life
.
I work with couples, groups, and individuals that feel ready to examine their inner world and outer relationships, perhaps feeling stuck in low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, or confusion. Clients who wish to explore issues around stress, overwhelm, relationships, identity, sexuality, spirituality, psychedelics, or trauma often resonate with my style of psychotherapy. I offer couples and individuals a warm environment that is supportive, collaborative, and direct. Building a relationship that has a safe space for tough and untouchable topics is essential to my work.

It can be hard to find the words or have the space to discuss and process
life
experiences, particularly if therapy is not seen as an acceptable part of your culture.
As human beings, we may desire freedom, fulfillment, or meaning in our lives. But sometimes, the mind can trap us in its false narratives. I work with multicultural expats, global nomads, & children of immigrants struggling to find their place and sense of belonging in the world, artists/creatives of color grappling with creators’ block and self-doubt, and South Asian teens & adults in the diaspora interested in exploring how perfectionism, unrealistic societal/familial expectations, and cultural heritage (including religion, spirituality, sexuality, caste, class, race) impact their emotional well-being and who they are as people.

Life Coaching Therapists
What can I expect from life coaching?
Clients and coaches will typically start by identifying the problem area(s) that the client hopes to address—then, the coach will help the client brainstorm potential solutions and explore concrete techniques to help the client attain their goals. Coaching is typically short-term and focused on finding solutions in the here and now, rather than exploring a client’s past. In addition to strategies aimed at the client’s specific concerns, coaches may encourage general stress management techniques such as meditation.
Can a life coach help treat anxiety?
Because the majority of life coaches are not licensed clinicians, they are not qualified to diagnose or treat anxiety. Anyone struggling with anxiety or another mental health condition should seek help from a licensed mental health practitioner. However, some coaching clients who struggle with subclinical anxiety report that working with their coach on other problems—such as career dissatisfaction or unhealthy habits—has a positive effect on their anxiety.
Can life coaching be done online?
Yes. While life coaching often happens in person, many coaches conduct sessions over the phone or via online platforms such as Zoom or Skype. Because life coaches are not subject to local licensing regulations in the same way that therapists are, they are able to see clients who live in other locations.
How long does life coaching last?
Life coaching tends to be a shorter-term process than therapy, though it does not always unfold over a specific period of time and is instead based on the coach’s or the client’s preferences. Coaching often takes place over three to 12 months but may be shorter or longer if necessary.
