I facilitate groups: Thrivers
Women
's Trauma Therapy Group and a Post-Launch Mom’s Group entitled “What the Hell Do I Want to Do with the Rest of My Life” as well as a LGBT Grief Group.
Do you feel trapped by your past and anxious about your future, unable to live in the present? This malaise of modern living is often a sign of past trauma. I can help you uncover and release the experiences that keep you from living a full and zestful life. My primary focus is
women
and parents, particularly those with a history of trauma. We’ll explore the feelings that arise in your body, and notice their links to your thoughts and behaviors. I’ll empower you to choose a more positive narrative, to look at your life through a different lens.

Whether I am sitting with a new parent, a
woman
suffering through fertility treatments, a therapist seeking consultation, or someone fighting to say afloat amidst their own nameless dread and anxiety, I look forward to accompaning you on your journey.
People come to therapy because they want something in their lives to be different. We hear that we can only change ourselves, yet even if we "know" the why or how or who of it, we can't always budge "it" on our own. My job is to help navigate the terrain, to make sense of the landscape, and to be with you as you reencounter your obstacles to living and loving your life.

As your therapist, I will help you reconnect with your body so you can explore your emotions and strengths in a transformative, meaningful way. Collaborating together, we can enhance a sense of empowerment in your life.

As a Christian, middle-aged, African American
woman
, I bring my life experience of survival, trauma, and victory to the sessions with clients with compassion and honor for their own life experience while gently opening up space for self-reflection and healing.
I work with clients at my office in Berkeley near the Ashby Bart Station. I prefer to work with a client who will come to sessions even when it is challenging to do so and allow the therapy relationship to open up space for safe exploration of the realities of life, ways to cope with reality, and improve spiritual and mental strength. Therefore, my client would demonstrate commitment to the therapy relationship, whether it is for brief therapy or long-term work, by doing the work necessary to understand the self and make necessary life decisions in order to maximize the availability of life energy.

There are usually two types of reasons people come into therapy. One is that find themselves making the same mistakes over and over again and they want to do something different, but are just not sure how. The other is that they have been carrying around a deep pain in their life that they want to resolve. Often these things are connected. This is why I work with you on two levels. I help you change the current unwanted behavior, while also helping you resolve issues from your past that may be effecting your reactions.

Do negative thoughts interfere with your self-esteem? relationships? moods? I can help. I specialize in helping
women
recognize & amplify inner resources to recover from trauma, anxiety, depression, and distress while attending to the important relationships in their lives. I inherently operate with a social justice lens, which means that therapy cannot be separated from familial, societal, and religious conditioning we experience as unique beings on this planet. As a mixed-heritage lesbian, I appreciate the ways internalized oppression can show up in our efforts to maintain mental and emotional health.

My approach to therapy emphasizes self knowledge, empowerment and insight helping move towards a more integral, meaningful and gratifying life. It is with passion and kindness that I witness the healing transformation a person goes through in the therapeutic relationship. Originally from Brazil, I speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese working with clients who speak these languages. Three theories permeate my work: the Integral theory of Ken Wilber, Psychodynamic theory, and Hakomi. I integrate into the analysis the physical, mental, emotional, and social parts of the self (Integral) in a mindfulness-based, body inclusive, and experiential perspective (Hakomi).

There are times when healing can't be done alone. My work is essentially relational -- healing in a therapeutic relationship. I help people overcome trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and substance abuse, bearing in mind that these issues can overlap or involve additional problems with eating, working, or social life. I am warm, engaged, active, and flexible, balancing exploratory work with directness. I see people who know what needs fixing, and those who don't. It is a gift to witness people emerging into the center of their own lives and finding the courage to tell their own truth.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
