I am trained in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and CBT for Psychosis and deliver those treatments in a kind, compassionate and culturally responsive way.
Life presents us with many challenges and sometimes we adeptly overcome those challenges and at other times we are overwhelmed by them. As a result, depression and anxiety can creep in and impact our relationships, work, school, and caring for ourselves. Life transitions, health care worker/leadership stress and burnout, painful relationships, struggling with mental health and/or physical illness issues, trauma, surviving in oppressive environments (racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, etc) can all contribute to ongoing suffering. I want to help you build a life filled with wellness and connection.

I often use CBT, DBT , mindfulness, and attachment theory.
My name is Jason Hsu, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I began working with clients when I volunteered in women’s shelters for five years. This led me to become passionate about working with marginalized groups that I am a part of and those that I am an ally. Through my own experience, I know just how difficult therapy can be, but also how powerful it can be. This insight – as well as my desire to normalize conversations about mental health among Asian-American communities – is what drives me to do this work. My approach to therapy is based on building trust, nonjudgmental listening, and empowering clients.

I can offer a variety of therapy modalities including CBT, DBT , Solution focused, trauma focused and EMDR.
Are you someone who feels emotions deeply? Do you struggle to “get going” when life gets overwhelming? Is it hard to find calm in the inner chaos? In today’s world, we are surrounded by stressors at every level—personal, community, national and global. There’s no doubt that when there is so much chaos in the world and our lives it can feel like we are out of control. We may feel “stuck” perhaps with unbearable sadness, grief, overwhelm or worry that have ripple effects in our daily lives including work, school, family and relationships. Talking to loved ones can be helpful, but sometimes we’d rather talk to someone who is impartial.

Many people seeking psychotherapy are engaged in experiences of personal growth, career development, and efforts to be better partners, sons, daughters, parents and friends. Yet each of us must decide what constitutes progress in our own way. I have learned that the road to satisfaction in interpersonal and professional endeavors takes willingness to accept our own and others' imperfections, and the courage to take some risks. For those who want to make change, hard work and practice are necessary. Even if you have tried psychotherapy in the past, you may benefit from newer approaches. If this resonates, let's talk.

We are all born whole, in lovingkind perfection. But life produces obstacles that sidetrack our becoming ourselves. Obstacles take any forms: trauma in the body, inauthentic identities, existential fears, beliefs indoctrinated but in conflict with one's essential values, or anxiety that something is wrong with oneself. The result can be alienation, grief, substance use issues, depression, anxiety, difficulty connecting, or incapacity to speak or create from the heart. Reconnecting with ones body, the natural world, and with an unconditional community are the foundations re-emerging into the Self you've always been.

I am a bicultural/bilingual, latinx psychologist with extensive experience working with youth of all ages who are struggling with mood, anxiety, and impulse control, and families who have experienced trauma. Key to this work is the relationship we build together. My goal is to help your family better understand what is happening for your child based on what research has taught us about how our brains work, while honoring your child’s unique experience and normalizing that we all have struggles. I use a strengths-based collaborative approach to get to know your family and identify and practice skills to help your child cope.

Overcoming issues can sometimes involve using strategies to change our thinking and behavior. We all have developed habits of thinking and behavior that are not serving our needs. Therapy can help by identifying these patterns, introducing strategies to reduce them, and increasing more helpful patterns.

Psychotherapy is about change. I work grounded in the belief that we have innate resources for thriving and ease that become concealed or underdeveloped. It is my role to help you understand your fundamental needs, history and challenges so you can realign with your strengths and wisdom; while uncovering whats blocking these resources. I work in a straightforward, compassionate and collaborative way to help you integrate thinking, feeling and intuition. The focus of my style is helping you become more confident and knowledgeable about yourself, your mind and relationships; while offering you the tools and guidance to do that.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
