Well, hello and thank you for taking the time to check my profile. I believe that life presents challenges to everyone regardless of culture, language, creed or personal strength. Often, there is a need for support to initiate corrections, change direction or even just for clarification of issues that manifest in the present moment. Challenge is also an opportunity. With the right approach, therapy may prove to be an effective tool. Our relationship would be dynamic and custom geared to validate, understand and address any issues of import to you as human being. Your life is unique, priceless and worthy of respect.

After many years as a psychologist I know one thing for certain: the foundation of therapy is a relationship built on trust, openness, and mutual respect. I see myself as a guide and partner in the change process. I have experience treating the full range of adult problems and have always worked with a culturally diverse population. I have particular interest in creativity, women's issues, and adult development throughout the life cycle. I have specialized training in addictions, codependence, and eating disorders. My therapeutic orientation is broadly psychodynamic, along with EMDR and mindfulness-based approaches.

I have specialized training in helping couples rekindle sex, love, and intimacy, especially couples that have given up hope or been in prior therapies.
You may long to live wholeheartedly - and to feel loved and connected - but struggle with anger, depression, loneliness, or inexplicable sadness and anxiety. You may find the stress of work, life, running a household, or parenting has diminished your capacity to feel joy and be creative. Once a source of comfort and pleasure, your intimate relationship may now be disappointing, frustrating, or even deadening. Therapy can help relieve the symptoms of debilitating feelings by uncovering the underlying (and sometimes unconscious) causes, and empower individuals - and couples - to become the authors of the lives they want to live.

I specialize in working with young children, families, and birthing people. This early relationship between a caregiver and child is central to a child's sense of safety and self esteem. Parenting is hard work and it can feel like you never know if you're doing the right thing. It can often be lonely and isolating. I work with caregivers to help them strengthen healthy relationships with others in their lives so that they can have more connections and feel less isolated.

I am specialized in treating individual adults, couples , and kids facing a wide variety of problems including depression and anxiety, childhood trauma, relationship problems, workplace and school related stress, low self-esteem, difficulty grieving a death or lost relationship , and feelings of meaninglessness or emptiness.
I see people as having rich, complex human emotions that are not well described with overly simple and often stigmatizing diagnostic labels like depression or generalized anxiety. Each person is entirely unique, with their own history, strengths, and challenges. In therapy, I will work with you to better understand yourself. When we can understand why you might be feeling or thinking or acting in a way that is not best for you, we can work together to change it in a way that is tailored to your needs and your circumstances.

I use my experiences in the relationship with the person/couple to shed light on repetitive relational patterns that may be active between me and the individual or couple.
Every person has many sides to their personality. Often these different sides are in conflict with one another and cause pain, anxiety and/or depression. When we find ourselves caught in repeated conflict in relationships, or we behave in ways that feel uncharacteristic, we often are in conflict with an aspect of ourself that is unknown or unconscious to us.The goal of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy is to help the unconscious self become conscious. When we begin to know ourselves better we can often make better choices and develop better tools to deal with the conflicts and stress that life brings us.

An important part of my work is couples ' counseling - the synergetic power of love and human connection that transforms miscommunication into care and mutual respect amazes me.
My approach to therapy emphasizes self knowledge, empowerment and insight helping move towards a more integral, meaningful and gratifying life. It is with passion and kindness that I witness the healing transformation a person goes through in the therapeutic relationship . Originally from Brazil, I speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese working with clients who speak these languages. Three theories permeate my work: the Integral theory of Ken Wilber, Psychodynamic theory, and Hakomi. I integrate into the analysis the physical, mental, emotional, and social parts of the self (Integral) in a mindfulness-based, body inclusive, and experiential perspective (Hakomi).

I have extensive experience working with grief and loss, depression, anxiety, mental illness, trauma, relationship and parenting issues, and chronic pain.
My approach consists of assisting people in identifying and exploring the stressors, issues, or losses that are causing pain, in order to begin to address them. I have a warm, direct communication style and will support you in developing a practice of self-care and self-reflection, while also implementing practical solutions, and coping skills. Building a healthy curiosity about your behavior, thoughts, and feelings will be encouraged in order to achieve a better understanding of the conscious and unconscious influences that perpetuate difficulties and conflicts. Deepening a self-understanding strengthens an ability to build healthier, more satisfying relationships with others and with yourself.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
