While I work differently with everyone, I often employ motivational interviewing, mindfulness- and meditation-based interventions, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and treatments to help people sleep better.
Over the last 17 years, I've worked with a diverse group of child, teenage, and adult clients (individuals and couples) across a wide range of settings, both inpatient and outpatient. I use a client-directed approach, where you and I collaborate to determine what the therapy process will look like, rather than the therapist taking the "expert role" on your life. Some of the problems I most often help people with are depression, insomnia , anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, grief & trauma, and adjustment to life's stressors and changes. I can see clients either at my Alameda office or over telemedicine.

I teach non-pharmaceutical techniques to reduce pain flares, treat insomnia , manage headaches, bolster mood, and optimize healing.
Therapy with me is a place of active change. I help people manage stress and reduce overwhelm, strengthen relationships, build resilience, and move from "stuckness" into growth. My patients come to me to shift thinking styles, improve communication, and increase productivity. I use evidence-based practices (such as CBT and mindfulness) to enhance self-awareness, build skills, and achieve targeted goals. We also explore core beliefs and behavior patterns to deepen self-understanding. With couples, my work is informed by the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. My office is located in a beautiful, peaceful marina setting.

My approach is affirming of all identities and their intersections. I integrate a culturally responsive approach to find balance between your inner self and addressing the impacts of oppressive systems. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, life transitions, depression, grief, insomnia , and trauma. One of my specialties is working with adults adjusting to recent cognitive changes (e.g., COVID brain fog, mild cognitive impairment) and family members of loved ones with a progressive neurological disorder (e.g., dementia). Amidst life's toughest moments, finding clarity, connection, and joy is still possible.

I can make a difference in your child's success in special education, IEPs, learning differences, navigating for parents who's children may need extra help in school, or having a negative effect on a young child who has lost their self esteem and has a failure mentality and turn it into a child believing and feeling like they can succeed and has pride with knowing they can achieve success. Academic help is every child's right through a federal law that is already in place. Many parents do not know how to access these programs. These techniques or resources are tailored specifically for your child.

You navigate this world each day doing the best you can, but life's biggest sources of pain, confusion, or stress can leave you lost and overwhelmed. You have to just "figure it out". Therapy provides a space to step back and examine yourself: intentionally, and with a plan and goal in mind. I believe that therapy should ultimately allow you to "become" your own therapist, bringing what you learn from our work back into your own world. I will challenge your long-held beliefs and habits in therapy and encourage your honest self-reflection, but always with elements of humor and compassion.

Through the process of psychotherapy, you will discover how your internal world interprets and affects your external world and how these mechanisms were developed. I can help you gain the insight and self-knowledge necessary for positive, lasting change.

I have worked with adults and youth for 20 years to help calm anxiety and lift depressed feelings and to find a way out of being limited by difficult emotions. My specialties include helping clients through life changes, issues related to work, school and personal relationships, anxiety and depression. Painful experiences or feelings from the past can cause us to feel disconnected from the relationships and opportunities in the world around us. I can work with you to help shift the circular patterns of thinking and feeling to allow that valuable energy to be redirected to positive change.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
