I treat couples and individuals, specializing in sexual and relationship problems, sexual abuse and PTSD, as well as depression and anxiety. I know that it takes courage to make that first phone call. Having empathy and even a sense of humor, when appropriate, helps my clients with this initial step. I work together with my clients to identify and change dysfunctional patterns of thought and behavior. My style is warm, direct, and interactive.

Do you feel disconnected from who you are? Are anxiety and depression negatively impacting your day-to-day life and relationships? We often overlook ways in which our childhood attachments, underlying core beliefs, and past traumatic experiences have shaped our sense of self and functioning in the world. When this happens, we can experience heightened symptoms of anxiety and depression that negatively impact the joy in our daily lives and our relationships. Therapy can help you explore these beliefs on a deeper level and develop a toolbox of coping mechanisms to manage stressful feelings.

As your therapist, I will help you gain clarity of what you want in life and discover the path that leads to it. Many times this involves simple, guided questions that explore how you came to feel the way you feel and why you do the things you do. I utilize a relational framework when working with adults, children, couples, and families. This means that I focus, first and foremost, on a sense of safety, trust, and enjoyment in the therapeutic process.

I have a passion for working with and supporting people. I'm not the type of therapist who sits quietly, hands crossed, saying "mmm-hmm, how are you feeling?" I’m interactive, and will provide you with a confidential, comfortable and safe space for you to talk, ask questions, and share your feelings and emotions. Together, we will work to develop the tools to help you through this journey called life. With my compassion, support, friendliness, and added touch of humor we will team to work through the difficulties or problems you are experiencing. ***My website may have been hacked. Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
