Since the onset of the Coronavirus, I have shifted my practice online and now offer teletherapy by phone and video to individuals and
couples
during day and evening hours.
Many have called this an unprecedented time -- isolated in our homes, concerned about the well-being of our loved ones and facing changes and circumstances we may have never imagined. If you are feeling disoriented, unsteady or fatigued, you are not alone. As we grapple with the ongoing affects of the pandemic, it is a time of both personal and collective upheaval, a time that may challenge our endurance, but also deepen our humanity and resilience. As your therapist, I will be a compassionate, respectful and trust-worthy guide, to help you navigate your experience, whatever struggles you are facing.

One's racial background can play a huge role in therapy, as feeling understood is a key element in any good therapeutic
relationship
.
Therapy is, in my opinion, something that everyone needs at some point in their life, but not everyone has access to it. Financial and cultural issues are often times the two biggest barriers between people who need therapy and people who receive therapy. My clients are a culturally diverse group, coming to therapy to address issues that they feel can be best helped and understood by a therapist of color. I also offer sliding scale fees to help with the financial barriers that too often keep those who both want and need therapy, from getting it.

As your therapist, I will help you gain clarity of what you want in life and discover the path that leads to it. Many times this involves simple, guided questions that explore how you came to feel the way you feel and why you do the things you do. I utilize a relational framework when working with adults, children,
couples
, and families. This means that I focus, first and foremost, on a sense of safety, trust, and enjoyment in the therapeutic process.

You may be struggling with depression or anxiety, grief or loss, or a difficult
relationship
. Maybe your stress level has increased recently and you find yourself struggling to cope. These types of situations sometimes leave people feeling “stuck” and unsure of how to move forward and regain their quality of life. Psychotherapy is a powerful, evidence-based mental health treatment that helps many people move past the stuckness and find new ways of managing life’s challenges.

My work is with individuals and
couples
who are ready to roll up their sleeves and get down to the task of making transformative shifts in their lives. Often people come to therapy believing that our history makes us who we are. Using the therapy
relationship
as a secure base from which to explore, clearing away the clutter and loosening a few knots, we often find that our history has obscured who we really are. In some way, most of us are longing for a sense of well-being that is not wholly dependent on external circumstances.

At East Bay Center for Anxiety Relief, we work with adults, children, teens,
couples
, and families. We also facilitate periodic groups focused on communication skills, social skills, anxiety, depression, and working women. We strive for mindful, efficient, and effective therapy. Our clinicians are trained in research-based models such as TEAM-CBT and Gottman
couples
/family models. We work a bit differently than more traditional practices. We don’t cram an hour of therapy into 50 minutes. Instead, we provide full 60-, 75-, or 90-minute sessions.

The
Couples
Enrichment Center is specifically designed for
couples
. We specialize in adults who were raised in dysfunctional families who want to have healthy adult relationships. We start with The Gottman Method which is the most empirically validated
couples
therapy used today. The Gottman's found that
couples
who stayed together all shared similar traits and behaviors; while
couples
who separated also shared similar traits and behaviors. Thanks to the thousands of the
couples
who came before, we now have specific interventions that can help you build a long lasting
relationship
and stay together.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
