Are you having difficulty getting along with your teenager? Do you feel like, no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to do anything right? You may be fed up with the constant tension in your home, leaving you feeling frustrated, anxious and overwhelmed, confused about how to help your child, perhaps even doubting yourself as a parent. It may be hard to remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to communicate with your teen without angry outbursts. You’re ready to feel more confident as a parent. Most of all, you’re ready to bring peace back into your home.

I originally built my practice based on a specialty in self-injury, which is the population I served for almost two decades. I developed a unique approach that relied on working with self-injurers and their families together, because I have learned that it is in the family where I am able to make the most effective change. I have since become almost primarily a family therapist, with a focus on high-conflict families.

Life is not black & white, the beauty is in the grey. I believe that everybody deserves support in their journey toward meaning and connection. The absence of support, meaning, purpose, or connection can lead to disorder and dysfunction. It is my privilege as a therapist to watch others explore and create a full life. My work focuses on the unique struggles of the individual, couple, or family. I use story, feedback, empathy, and education to help each client discover balance and their authentic self. My hope is that each person I get to work with learns the tools that work for them and can embrace the grey areas in life.

Curiosity and empathy will be key components in our work. I work with adults and children, in individual, couple and family settings; heterosexual and LGBTQ+. You can view my specialties on this profile and my website.

Sports Performance Therapists
How does sports psychology work?
Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.

How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?
The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.

How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?
Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.

What are the limitations of sports psychology?
Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
