Parent Child Interaction Therapy, (PCIT) is an effective model of therapy for children 2-9.
As a child & family therapist, I guide families through meaningful change. I help parents move from feeling concerned and frustrated to optimistic and empowered. Children move from lost and alone, to secure and loved. I focus on communication and relationship building, supporting families by increasing their effectiveness in these areas. Parents and youth experience increased mutual respect, understanding, and empathy, creating opportunities for communication, validation, and problem-solving, in a safe environment. I use a Family Therapy orientation because I believe your relationship with your child is their most valuable asset.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience specializing in anxiety, depression, maternal mental health, women’s issues, life transitions, and parenting . Through my experience, I’ve learned to base my practice around what science calls the negativity bias. This is the notion that when we struggle, we are neurobiologically wired to make sense of our struggle by creating a negative story around it. The negativity bias often keeps us feeling defeated, broken and not good enough.

I provide psychotherapy to a wide variety of conditions including anxiety, depression, family conflict and parenting skills.
My approach to psychotherapy is collaborative, empathetic and unique to each individual's personal needs. I believe the most important component of therapy is establishing a genuine, trusting connection. I strive to create a therapeutic environment in which the clients feel respected, supported and understood in order to actively explore deep personal issues and experiment with new ways of thinking and behaving about their present and future. During our process, we will explore emotions and relationships that impact your life. Together we will clarify the development of thoughts and feelings and understand how they shape us.

I have extensive experience in treating substance use disorders, mood regulation and relationship issues including couple therapy and divorce parenting plans.
I am a clinical psychologist in private practice and have been providing psychotherapy services to adults, families, couples and adolescents for more than 20-years. I work with patients to identify their own personal goals and relationship needs in an effort to improve well-being and increase feelings of satisfaction and authenticity. Life transitions as well as difficulty in important relationships often drives people to seek help. Beginning psychotherapy is an important step in building skills to manage life challenges and stressors. Improvements in self-care can have dramatic benefits on emotional and physical health.

The support groups I facilitate include such topics as stress relief through mindfulness, parenting concerns/support, transitioning to college, and support for young people who have lost parents or siblings.
Are your anxious thoughts interfering with your quality of life? Are you spending so much time worrying about the future that you can’t focus on the present? Or are you ruminating on the past with regret, leaving you feeling depressed and uncentered? Does your anxiety/depression keep you up at night, leaving you feeling lethargic and unproductive during the day? Does it negatively impact your relationships and keep you from enjoying the things that once brought you joy? People seek out therapy for a variety of reasons and usually with one hope in mind - to restore peace in their lives. This is where I can help.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
