We heal and grow best in relationships that support the hard work of self-knowledge and self-growth. In my practice, open dialogue is important. Our curiosity will help you explore and know yourself better. What we carry forward from past relationships affects both ourselves and our loved ones in the present. Coming to know and understand what is going on can help shift things for you. If you are looking inward and working on yourself, you can make bigger gains doing it with someone who has the training and experience to facilitate an experience within you through dialogue.

I assume you're here because you're struggling in some way, and that whatever you've been doing in your life to deal with your pain simply isn't working any longer. So you've hit a kind of impasse, and you're unable to work around the pain, manage it, ignore it. My clients usually find me through some kind of loss--a divorce or relationship upset, an illness or other transitional experience--often accompanied by difficult feelings and behaviors. Taken together, the result is a crisis of meaning and a radical disruption of the status quo of their lives.

Most people suffer from unconscious guilt and shame stemming from their childhood traumas. Guilt causes us to unconsciously do self-destructive things. Shame causes us to isolate ourselves and hide our true selves. Both guilt and shame make people feel undeserving and isolated. My approach to therapy is to help patients find relief from their irrational guilt and feelings of shame and to develop a realistic sense of pride in who they are.

My interventions are rooted in providing psychoeducation and honoring client self-determination, helping clients to better understand their experiences. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) interventions to assist children, youth, and young adults in recognizing the interconnectedness between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, which enables them to develop and implement personalized coping strategies to reduce anxiety and depression. I have also received training in mindfulness-based interventions aimed at assisting clients in using breathwork and meditation to reduce their stress.

Do you look at other people and think they have it all together? Or think that you will start tending to your needs once you are finished with school, in a new relationship, fit into your old clothes, or are not so overwhelmed with life? You get so caught up with the daily pressure of trying to do it all that your emotional, mental, and physical health suffers. Trying to live up to others’ expectations takes a heavy toll on your overall well-being. So you give in to thoughts and behaviors which you know aren’t healthy, causing you to spin into a shame cycle of not feeling like enough.

I think therapy is a collaborative process that is unique to each individual. My goal is to support each of my clients in the way that they need me to. Sometimes this means teaching tools and techniques, sometimes this means exploring painful memories. Having honest conversations is foundational to the work we do. Honest doesn't always mean serious. It can involve humor and jokes, as long as it's real and genuine. I believe I work well with those who are willing to identify small steps and move forward despite how uncomfortable it is, in order to find peace.

Jungian/Psychodynamic, Intersubjective "Depth" psychotherapy. Adults & Individuals. Cancer Coaching (see website). Approach informed by the work of C.G. Jung and those focusing on the workings of the unconscious "mind," that often ends up pulling one's strings, just outside of one's conscious awareness. It isn't often one's conscious "thinking" that is at the root of one's issues, but the "unconscious" processes that become stuck and unable to move on. Helping to address these processes is at the core of my work.

In 40 years of clinical practice I have come to think of what I do as a unique form of education. Psychotherapists "teach" not so much by telling people what to do (although good advice is often useful), but by helping clients to find the strength within themselves, and the needed support from those around them, to address the difficulties in their current lives in new and more effective ways. A therapeutic environment enables clients to develop a new way of understanding their life experiences that promotes higher self-esteem, increased capacity for intimacy, and greater effectiveness in work.

I work with both individuals and couples on issues that commonly hold us back from building genuine emotional and sexual intimacy. Shame, guilt and anxiety around communicating our needs and desires are common issues I work on, as well as physical problems such as erectile dysfunction and low desire. Communication, expressing your boundaries, and repairing relationship wounds are just a few tools I love working on in our sessions. Helping people discover their core desires and assisting them in incorporating them into their relationship is always the highlight of my day.

I seek to provide a thoughtful and reflective setting where clients develop greater understanding of their problems and limitations through honest exploration of themselves, and to bolster strengths/foster growth. I provide a friendly and open atmosphere to invite sharing of whatever thought or feeling that comes up so that they can be explored, analyzed and ultimately changed if you want. I work in a collaborative way and do not necessarily see my role as an advice giver, but as a thoughtful companion in helping you find your own solutions and understanding. I use a flexible blend of clinical techniques and theories.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in San Rafael?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
