Therapy is a process of personal growth and empowerment. Ultimately, therapy requires an individual to commit to making meaningful changes in their behavior and ways of thinking, both of which impact the way we feel. The work that goes into therapy requires great dedication-on the part of both the client and the therapist. It is the professional relationship that develops between them that forms the foundation of the change process. My goal as a therapist is to ensure that every client with whom I work feels heard, comfortable speaking with me, and has a sense of direction and renewed hope by the time the session is over.
When I first meet with clients, we simply start to get to know each other. I will evaluate your symptoms and problem areas, but I'll also ask about your interests, strengths, and goals. Then we'll discuss the treatment approach(es) that may be best fitted for your needs.
Helping clients to change is deeply rewarding work. I've been counseling children and adults since 2006, working in private practice and inpatient hospital settings. I also teach psychology courses at Drake University. Thank you for reading this introduction--please email or call if I can answer any questions for you.
